Nowadays, pollution is a popular term with everyone in the world and air pollution is one type of pollution. The definition of air pollution is one such form that refers to the contamination of the air, irrespective of indoors or outside. A physical, biological or chemical alteration to the air in the atmosphere can be termed as pollution. There are some main reasons which cause air contamination such as burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities, exhaust from factories and industries, mining operations, and indoor air pollution. Air pollution always has bad effects on our life. Harmful gases, dust, and smoke enter into the atmosphere and make it difficult for plants, animals and humans to survive. We also can see some examples of the result of air contamination which occurs around us as global warming, acid rain, and depletion of ozone layer. The effects of air pollution are alarming, so governments over the world should have suitable policies of protecting the environment, especially air quality to create a clean world for our generation in the future.

Air pollution

We are nowadays becoming more aware of pollution matters that affect dramatically our lives; especially there is growing concern about air pollution. There are some reasons that lead to this kind of pollution. Firstly, the development of industrial zones, factories and building construction areas is producing a large amount of dust and poisonous air. Especially in the developing countries, people rarely pay their attention to the air treatment process that make the air pollution condition even worse. Secondly, because of the increasing unrbanization, it can be easily seen that there is always a lot of traffic in rush hour and dust one the road these days. The smoke from vehicles and manufacturing exhaust increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the air which makes us feel really hard to breathe. The consequences are very bed. Smog and dust can do serious harm to our health and especially our lungs. We have thousands of asthma and adult respiration distress cases each year which raise concern about the air quality. Moreover, acid rains are becomning more and more popular which damage crops and fields. Many people believe that air pollution is also causing global warming and it is difficult to improve the air without the efforts of all countries around the world.

The gases from the exhausts of cars have also increased air pollution in most cities. The lead in petrol produces a poisonous gas which often collects in busy streets surrounded by high buildings. Children who live in areas where there is a lot of lead in the atmosphere cannot think as quickly as other children and they are clumsy when they use their hands.

There are other long-term effects of pollution. If the gases in the atmosphere continue to increase, the earth’s climate may become warmer. A lot of the ice near the Poles may melt and may cause serious floods.

Environmental pollution is a term that (1) refers to all the ways by which man pollutes his surroundings. Man dirties the air with exhaust gases and smoke, (2) poisons the water with chemicals and other substances, and damages the (3) soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. Man also pollutes his surroundings in various other ways. For example, people ruin natural beauty by scattering junk and litter on the land and in the water.

Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing mankind today. Air, water, and soil are necessary to the survival of living things. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other (4) marine life. Pollution of soil reduces the amount of land that is available for growing food. Environmental pollution also brings ugliness (5) to man’s natural beautiful world.

II. Read and answer the questions below. (1 point)

There are two types of air pollution. That is the outdoor air pollution caused by factories, automobiles and biological matter. We most commonly associate air pollution with smog and acid rain. That is of course a problem and you might be surprised how aware children are of the air pollution concerns. However, there is also indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution causes just as many health problems around the globe as outdoor air pollution. And because many people are not aware of it, they suffer unnecessarily. According to the World Health Organization, 2.4 million people die each year from air pollution and 1.5 million of these deaths are caused by indoor air pollution. Educating young  kids about  air pollution can be an efficient solution to this alarming worldwide issue because it can make them somewhat aware of air pollution. They may have heard about the greenhouse effect, global warming and acid rain. These problems may be  frightening for children to hear. However, children also have the power to make changes both inside their home and globally.

6.      What causes the outdoor air pollution?

7.      Is indoor air pollution a reason for nearly as many health problems in the world as outdoor one?

CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Climate change

Climate change, also called global warming, refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. An overwhelming scientific consensus maintains that climate change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air. The gases trap heat within the atmosphere, which can have a range of effects on ecosystems, including rising sea levels, severe weather events, and droughts that render landscapes more susceptible to wildfires.

The green house effect

While other planets in Earth's solar system are either scorching hot or bitterly old, Earth's surface has relatively mild, stable temperatures. Earth enjoys these temperatures because of its atmosphere, which is the thin layer of gases that cloak and protect the planet. However, 97 percent of climate scientists agree that humans have changed Earth's atmosphere in dramatic ways over the past two centuries, resulting in global warming The exchange of incoming and outgoing radiation that warms the Earth is often referred to as the greenhouse effect because a greenhouse works in much the same way. Incoming UV radiation easily passes through the glass walls of a greenhouse and is absorbed by the plants and hard surfaces inside. Weaker IR radiation, however, has difficulty passing through the glass walls and is trapped inside, thus warming the greenhouse. This effect lets tropical plants thrive inside a greenhouse, even during a cold winter.

Consequences of global warming

There are two major effects of global warming: the increase of temperature on the earth by about 30 to 50C (5.40 to 90Fahrenheit) by the year 2100 are Rise of sea levels by at least 25 meters (82 feet) by the year 2100. Other consequences are listed below:

• Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to melting of land ice.

• Amounts and patterns of precipitation are changing.

• The total annual power of hurricanes has already increased markedly since 1975 because their average intensity and average duration have increased.

• Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts heat waves, and tornadoes.

• Higher or lower agricultural yields, further glacial retreat, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions.

• Diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier
