Năm 2003, thế giới kỷ niệm 100 năm ra đời chiếc máy bay đầu tiên. Orville và Wilbur Wright ở Mỹ đã chế tạo ra chiếc máy bay nặng hơn không khí đầu tiên. Họ đã mất hơn 4 năm để biến ý tưởng của mình thành hiện thực. Chuyến bay 12 giây lịch sử của nó vào ngày 17 tháng 12 năm 1903 là điểm khởi đầu của ngành hàng không thế giới.
Năm 1908, Léon Delagrange trở thành hành khách hàng không đầu tiên khi ông bay cùng phi công người Pháp Henri Farman ở Paris. Sáu năm sau, vào ngày 1 tháng 1, chuyến bay đầu tiên của anh theo lịch trình hoạt động giữa St.Petersburg ở Nga và Tampa ở Florida, Hoa Kỳ. Từ đây hàng không bắt đầu phát triển rất nhanh.
