Most people in my country have only lived in cities for the past thirty years. Before that they have lived in villages or small towns by the sea or in the mountains. This is why it is not unusual to hear even young children who they have lived in cities all their lives are talking about 'their village'. What they mean is the place where their parents were grew up or previous generations of their family lived. Even today although 'the village' is an important part of the lives of the majority of people who now make their living in cities. Most families still have yet a house in a village somewhere around the country and they return at there in the summer or during other holidays to help with the family land or just to spend time with friends and relatives. There is a wonderful sense of community and a shared past in each these villages which is so different from the cities in where most of us live. If these villages can survive, I am sure people will find it more easier to spend time in them in the future. People who have made many money in the cities will start to can invest in their old family homes and help to maintain this lovely aspect of family life in my country.

The television was invented more thanone hundred years ago by Alexander Gragam Bell, an American. It is now very extensively used everywhere. In Vietnam, most of the people have their own telephones in their homes. It makes us possible to talk to our friends far away without all they way to their homes.

In actually working it appears to be simple. It has a transmitter into which you speak and a receiver at which you hear; and these two are now combined in the same small instrument, one at each end. The two persons who want to speak have each an instrument. There is a connecting write andelectric battery by the side of each, or there is a common connecting station. it is the electric current enables the sound vibrations to be reproduced at the other end, and the person at the end heara the talk of his friend.

Its working is marvelous, though simple. Two persons can now carry on a conversation with each other while both are lounging on their easy chairs. There is thus no need now to leave your house to talk to a friend on any business. It saves time, trouble and expense.

I. Read the passage and do the tasks that follow. ____________________________ Playing football on the beach, samba dancing at night, relaxing with a delicious ice-cold fruit juice in an outdoor café, meeting sociable, hospitable people: this is what I think of when I remember the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro. ____________________________ Rio is called "The Marvellous City" for a good reason. It is in an extraordinary location in Guanabara Bay, surrounded by spectacular mountains and by impressive sandy beaches facing south onto the Atlantic. The views almost everywhere in the city are breathtaking. ____________________________ There is something to do in Rio 24/7. In the morning, you can visit the centre with its museums and picturesque, historic churches or go up Mount Christ with Corcovado to see the eye-catching statue of Christ with its stunning views. In the afternoon, you can relax on the beach and watch the world go by or join in a football game with the welcoming, good-natured locals. Or you can go to the striking Maracana Stadium to watch the professionals play. At night, there is music and dancing everywhere. Even if you are not a brilliant samba dancer, you will have an amazing time. ____________________________ Of course, Rio does have problems. There are enormous areas of depressing slums on the hills around the city and violent crime can be a problem, though the situation has improved recently. However, for me Rio is one of the most fascinating places in the world and Cariocas the warmest people, so I cannot wait to go back!

City Life or Country Life? Which place is the better - the city or the country? Two American teenagers talk about where they live. Leo, 16: I live in New York and it’s great. There are huge shopping centres and interesting places to go. My mum loves all the art galleries and museums, but I like Central Park where I go skateboarding. It's big enough to get away from the noise and traffic. The country isn't for me. It isn’t exciting enough for people of my age. Most people don't live close enough to their friends to have enough a good social life. It's too quiet and too boring. City life is the best. Amelie, 14: I live on a ranch in the country, in Colorado. In the summer, we go hiking in the mountains, and in the winter I go snowboarding. I really like it because it's relaxing and quiet. I can’t imagine life in the city. It isn't safe enough to walk around alone and it’s too dangerous to cycle in the streets because of the traffic. Overall, I think the city is too noisy, too dirty, too crowded and too expensive. I prefer country life!

There are some students, however, who prefer final examinations, saying that in (41. COMPARE) they only have to work hard for two months a year and so they have more time for their leisure (42. ACT). They say that some students receive (43. ASSIST) with their coursework from their parents, so it is not an accurate (44. MEASURE) of how hard they have worked or of their real (45.
