VI. The people below want to book a hotel in a European city. Read the descriptions of six hotels in the city and decide which hotel would be the most suitable for the following people. (10 points)

1. Peter and Mary want to celebrate their anniversary in a stylish hotel with good service. They plan to eat out, see a show and go sightseeing, without using public transport.

2. David wants to do some exercise at his hotel before attending a conference in the city centre. Afterwards he plans to walk back, have a meal in his room and relax for the evening.

3. Alex and Sarah want a room in a traditional hotel with suitable facilities for their two children. They want to eat well before going sightseeing and want help with ideas for what to do.

4. Steve wants to stay overnight in a central hotel where he can experience the typical atmosphere of the city. He would like a light breakfast before leaving by public transport for his early morning flight.

5. Holly and Lucia are travelling round Europe and want to stay somewhere cheap and with nightlife nearby. They hope to make friends with other young travellers like themselves.

A. Royal

It’s easy to miss this central hotel hidden away in a side street. Full of character, it is popular with families and business travellers but don’t expect luxury service. Unlimited coffee, but nothing more, is available in the morning, but there are food stores a short walk away.

B. Mars

Hotel Mars is located on one of the main streets, a short walk from tourist attractions, theatres and restaurants. The luxury rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished with antiques. An excellent breakfast is served by waiters in the top-floor restaurant, which also offers spectacular evening views over the city.

C. Haussman

The wonderful city museum is right next door to this friendly 19th century hotel. The old-fashioned furniture and attractive iron balconies all add to the homely atmosphere. The hotel games room will keep all ages entertained, and there’s plenty on offer at the self-service breakfast. Staff are always happy to supply information about what’s on.

D. Windmill

This medium-priced hotel surrounded by artists’ studios, lively bars and interesting food shops is right in the middle of the city. The underground station outside will take you anywhere, including the airport within minutes. Help yourself to breakfast from 8 am downstairs, or coffee and rolls can be brought to your room before that.

E. Hi-Tech

All costs are kept low here. Guests book on the internet, then check in and buy everything they need from machines. Breakfast comes in airline-style boxes. You sleep in a tiny cabin for one and roll up your bed during the day. A fun choice for backpackers, who get together in the lively club next door.

F. Archway

This 19th century hotel is in a busy area with plenty of restaurants. It was modernised two years ago and now has a fitness centre. Rooms are very comfortable with widescreen TV. There is no restaurant, but you can order decent hot food via reception from the takeaway next door.

BEACHES

A. Hadwick

B. Godstow

A narrow beach which is surrounded by high cliffs and is popular tor sunbathing, surfing and sailing. It is safe to swim here. It is next to Winbum Golf Club but there is no car park and me only access is along the coastal path. No café or shopping facilities.

C. Amrith

A large beach which attracts quite a few visitors but doesn’t get crowded because of its size. There are pleasant views out to sea ond to Bedruth Island. Swimming is safe but surfing is not permitted. There is a café and parking but no shops.

E. Portsea

The excellent views make this beach well worth a visit. There are shallow pools which are safe for children to play in. However, there are no roads to the beach and the only access is across fields, though this doesn’t stop some keen surfers. There are no facilities here.

F. Holcombe

This is a small beach within easy reach of the town centre and its many shops. It is very popular so there isn’t much space. It is next to the Milgrove Golf Club, which is open to the public and has a restaurant. There is no children’s play area, and surfing is not permitted.

G. Fishport

A small beach which never gets crowded because there are many steep steps down to the beach and there is no car park. There is a small shop but no children’s play area or café. Swimming is good and there are pleasant walks along the coastal path.

H. Marple

Although unsuitable for surfing, this is a popular boating centre. Swimming is good and the many pools of shallow water are safe for children. Ocean Watersports Centre, which offers lessons in sailing and water skiing, is next to the beach. There is a steep path to the beach from the car park.

The teenagers below all want to see a film at their school film club.
On the opposite page there are descriptions of eight films showing at the club. Decide which film
would be the most suitable for the following teenagers.
For questions 9 - 13, mark the correct letter (A-H) on your answer sheet.

9.Hannah wants to see a romantic comedy with famous actors playing the
main parts. She enjoys watching movies by new directors who use music
in their films.
10.Federico only watches science fiction films. He likes movies with lots of
action and special effects but he’s not bothered whether the actors are
famous or not.
11.Lily likes to see films that are based on novels so that she can read them
too. She wants to see a recent, historical drama with a happy ending.
12.Josh wants to watch a complicated thriller with fast and funny dialogue
between the characters, where you are never sure who is who until the
end.
13.Chloe wants to see an old, black and white musical. She loves films
involving people her own age, which include magic and are set in different
worlds.

9. ..........10. ..........11. ..........12. ..........13. ..........

A. Land
If you enjoy the romance of the high seas, this film
is for you. Teenager Tom Dudley hides on a ship
sailing to the Americas. He hopes to become rich
but that's not how things end for Tom. Although
made in the 1970s with none of the special effects
we expect today, this film is a fine piece of story
telling.
B. The Tower
This movie was in cinemas last year and it is director
Blake Cole’s best film. The film is very close to the
original book and the main characters are played
beautifully by two unknown young actors. They bring
the past back to life and make you really care about
them. So when they eventually marry you’ll have a
tear in your eye!
C. Blaze
This film may not be full of Hollywood stars but it's
full of high-speed chases, amazing computer
graphics and fantastic music. In the year 4838,
Jonas leaves the world he loves to look for work on
a distant planet. However, he finds more than he
expected. This film is based on the popular cartoon
novel by Toshio Yoshida.
D. Net Worth
Vince is a science geek who spends ah his time
playing computer games. So everyone is surprised
when he suddenly becomes a millionaire after
inventing a new game that people can play on the
internet. Laugh out loud as Vince enjoys himself
being the new ‘Mr Popular’ at school.
E. Star Child
Sunny Jones, played by Bonny Wild, is a teenager
who finds herself in the land of Zorn, under the spell
of an evil queen. Although it’s not in colour, the
singing and dancing and Wild’s wonderful voice
bring the film to life and make it as enjoyable today
as it was back in 1941, when it was made.
F. Downlord
In director Guss Hall's first film, Katie's life is
controlled by the tracks she's listening to on her
iPod. She falls in love with Toby while she's listening
to love songs but things go wrong between them
when she starts listening to modern jazz! Well
known stars Hedda Gold and Jake Myers keep the
laughs coming throughout the film.
G. Making it
Fran is a real young pop singer who dreams of being
famous in this documentary drama. The director,
Bob Johansson, chose to film this movie in black
and white and the final effect is wonderful. The film
shows just how hard it is to make dreams come true.
H. Catch
Harry Black is a spy, at least he says he is, but then
he meets and falls in love with Greta who might
actually be a spy. There are some amusing, high
speed conversations in this film, so listen carefully
and enjoy the action. Arc they spies or not? You’ll
only find out in the final scene.
