Adventure in the air

The first ever balloon flight carrying passengers was made by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. They used hot air to float the balloon over 1,000 metres up into the sky. Nowadays, people still fly in hot-air balloons but there is also a less well-known sport called “cluster ballooning”; instead of one big balloon, hundreds of small balloons are used.

Cluster ballooning was invented by a lorry driver called Larry Walters. Larry had wanted to fly using balloons for a long time. (1)_______________ It took almost 20 years, however, for his dream to finally come true. One day, Larry decided to do an experiment: he wanted to try flying a few metres above his garden. So he bought 45 balloons, filled them with gas called helium, and tied them to a chair. Then he cut the rope that was holding the chair to the ground. (2)_________________ The chair, with Larry sitting in it, floated several kilometres into the sky rather than just a few metres!

The wind was blowing strongly and Lary began to float out toward the sea. Things were getting dangerous. Then, to make matters even worse, the wind changed, and the balloons started to blow towards the local airport. Lary felt very worried. (3)__________________ The story of Lary’s flight was all over the news and this is how the adventure sport of cluster ballooning was born.

One experienced cluster balloonist, Leo Burns, flew his cluster balloons over the largest range of mountains in Europe – The Alps. This wasn’t his first flight, though. Leo had got his pilot’s licence several years before, so was already used to flying. (4) ___________________ According to Leo, there is no better way to fly. “Cluster ballooning’s amazing,” he says, “The balloons are usually completely silent. (5)______________ They weren’t as safe as modern cluster balloon either.”

   A.  He knew this would make him feel very afraid.

   B. The old-fashioned hot-air balloons made a horrible noise.

   C. In fact, he was just a boy when he first started thinking about it.

   D. Luckily, he landed safely after a couple of hours.

   E. They are also much less dangerous.

   F. However, there was an unexpected problem.

   G. But these days, he prefers to use balloons.

   H. Immediately after that, he tried to learn how this would be possible.

HOT-AIR BALLOONS

A hot-air balloon consists of three basic parts. The large balloon is (13) ................ as the “envelope” and is made of nylon - the same material used to produce kites, sails and sleeping bags. There are burners under the envelope to heat the air inside and finally a basket (14) ................ the passengers stand. From this (15) ................ the passengers can enjoy the views of the countryside below.

(16) ................ understand what allows the balloon to lift into the air you must know about “convection” or heat transfer. The scientific (17) ................ is that by heating the air inside the envelope you increase the space the air (18) ................ When this happens, (19) ................ air gets pushed out of the envelope. With less air in the envelope, it (20) ................ lighter and therefore able to travel up. Once the burner is shut off, however, the (21) ................ thing happens. Cold air from outside enters the envelope, (22) ................ the balloon heavier and it starts to fall.

Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas in 1897. Thirty one years later, she received a phone call that would change her life. She was invited to become the first woman passenger to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a plane. The flight took more than 20 hours – about three times longer than it routinely takes today to cross the Atlantic by plane. Earhart was twelve years old before she ever saw an airplane, and she didn’t take her first flight until 1920. But she was so thrilled by her first experience in a plane that she quickly began to take flying lessons. She wrote, “As soon as I left the ground, I knew I myself had to fly.”

After that flight Earhart became a media sensation. She was given a ticker tape parade down Broadway in New York and even president Coolidge called to congratulate her. Because her record – breaking career and physical appearance were similar to pioneering pilot and American hero Charles Lindbergh, she earned the nickname “Lady Lindy.” She wrote a book about her flight across the Atlantic, called 20 Hrs, 40 Min.

Earhart continued to break records, and also polised her skills as a speaker and writer, always advocating women’s achievements, especially in aviation. Her next goal was to achieve a transatlantic crossing alone. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh became the first person to make a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic. Five years later, Earhart became the first woman to repeat that feat. Her popularity grew even more and she was the undisputed queen of the air. She then wanted to fly around the world, and in June 1973 she left Miami with Fred Noonan as her navigator. No one knows why she left behind important communication and navigation instruments. Perhaps it was to make room for additional fuel for the long flight. The pair made it to New Guinea in 21 days and then left for Howland Island, a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The last communication from Earhart and Noonan was on July 2, 1937 with a nearby Coast Guard ship. The United States Navy conducted a massive search for more than two week but no trace of the plane or its passengers was ever found. Many people believe they got lost simply ran out of fuel and died.

According to the passage, when did Amelia Earhart began her first flight _______.

A. when she was 12 years old

B. when she first saw an airplane

C. when she started to take flying lessons

D. 1920
