Questions: 6-10:
SCHOOL COUNTS THE COST OF STORM

When children and parents arrived at school in the small village of Brownston yesterday morning, they were surprised to see the head teacher standing outside the front of the school. The school gates were closed, because a tree had fallen onto the roof of the school hall and a number of windows were broken. A storm the night before had made school buildings unsafe, so the children were sent home until further notice.

Justine Cram, a mother with two young children at the school, said that she was unhappy with the way the head teacher sent the children home. ‘I have to cancel all my work appointments today. My customers won't be pleased, but I have to stay at home to look after my daughters,' she said. 'Children should be in school every day! The head teacher needs to think again about closing. He should find a safe place to teach the children until they can use the buildings again.'

Richard Thomas, the head teacher, explained that he had no choice but to send the children home. ‘The storm happened in the early hours of Monday morning, just a few hours before school starts. When I arrived, I immediately decided it was not a safe place for children to be in. I know parents are unhappy that the school is closed, but if their children or members of staff were hurt because of the problems, that would be worse.'

Mr Thomas hopes to open the school again by Thursday.

Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave responsibly. They learnt to respect seniority. When they passed an object to another person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they had to bow and greet the oldest person first. Boys learnt to work hard to support their families. Girls learnt to do housework, and to take care of others. Loyalty and honesty were highly appreciated. When they made a mistake, they would not let another person be punished for it. That would be cowardly and mean. They were taught that families were strong, and everybody should stick together in adversity. Fortunately, many of these values have been well preserved. They have contributed to making the unique Vietnamese culture, and strengthening our society. 1. Good manners are considered valuable to both individuals and the community as a whole. 2. Manners are learned and taught, and passed down from generation to generation. 3.Children were taught responsible behavior, such as respecting seniority and using both hands to pass objects. 4. In the past, both men and women were expected to be married at quite young ages. Marriages were generally arranged by parents and family, with their children having little chance to say no in the matter. In the past, it was not surprising to find that a bride and groom had only just met on the day of their engagement or marriage. In modern Vietnam, this has changed completely as people choose their own marriage-partners based on love, and in consideration primarily to their own needs and wants. Moreover early marriage is quite illegal.

The traditional Vietnamese wedding is one of the most important of traditional Vietnamese occasions. Regardless of westernization, many of the age-old customs practiced in a traditional Vietnamese wedding continue to be celebrated by both Vietnamese in Vietnam and overseas, often combining both western and eastern elements. Besides the wedding ceremony, there is also an engagement ceremony which takes place usually half a year or so before the wedding. The number of guests in attendance at these banquets is huge, usually in the hundreds. Several special dishes are served. Guests are expected to bring gifts, often money, which the groom and bride at one point in the banquet will go from table to table collecting.
