Dear Hoang Anh, I am having a wonderful time in Hue. The people are very friendly and hospitable but the weather is rather cold and humid. In Hue, I visited my uncles and aunts. I met all my cousins and we were all happy to see each other. My cousin Nam showed me round every interesting place in Hue such as: Trang Tien Bridge, Ngo Mon Gate, Mausoleums of Nguyen Dynasty, Thien Mu Pagoda, cct. It was very exciting. I bought lots of souvenirs and photos for my family and friends. See you soon. Your friend, Hoa

Life in the city is full of activity. Early in the morning hundreds of people rush out of their homes in the manner ants do when their nest is broken. Soon the streets are full of traffic. Shops and offices open, students flock to their schools and the day's work begins. The city now throb with activity, and it is full of noise. Hundreds of sight-seers, tourists and others visit many places of interest in the city while businessmen from various parts of the world arrive to transact business.
Then towards evening, the offices and day schools begin to close. Many of the shops too close. There is now a rush for buses and other means of transport. Everyone seems to be in a hurry to reach home. As a result of this rush, many accidents occur. One who has not been to the city before finds it hard to move about at this time. Soon, however, there is almost no activity in several parts of the city. These parts are usually the business centres.
With the coming of night, another kind of actịvity begins. The streets are now full of colorful lights. The air is cooler and life becomes more leisurely. People now seek entertainment. Many visit the cinemas, parks and clubs, while others remain indoors to watch television or listen to the radio. Some visit friends and relatives and some spend their time reading books and magazines. Those who are interested in politics discuss the latest political developments. At the same time, hundreds of crimes are committed. Thieves and robbers who wait for the coming of night become active, and misfortune descends upon many. For the greed of a few, many are killed, and some live in constant fear. To bring criminals to justice, the officers of the law are always on the move.
Workers and others who seek advancement in their careers attend educational institutions which are open till late in the night. Hundreds of them sit for various examinations every year. The facilities and opportunities that the people in the city have to further their studies and increase their knowledge of human affairs are indeed many. As a result, the people of the city are usually better informed than those of the village, where even a newspaper is sometimes difficult to get.
The city could, therefore, be described as a place of ceaseless activity. Here, the drama of life is enacted every day

Dear Lan,

We're having a great time here in Nha Trang city. The weather has been sunny. The beaches are so clean with the blue sea and white sand. The hotel and the food are great. The local people are very friendly. Ha's taken many photos with them. We've gone for a swim all day and had a barbecue dinner with full of seafood on the beach.

Tomorrow we'll join a scuba-diving tour to explore the colourful coral reefs. We're so excited about this.

Wish you were here!

With love,

Nhi.

Dear Jean
How are you doing? I'm writing to you from Kołobrzeg at the Polish Seaside. I'm there with my family. We have a great time, though the weather isn't so good, as we'd like. Therefore we spent our first day on a campside, where we are staying. Yesterday morning we climbed up to the lighthouse and the view were really great. And in the afternoon we went to the beach, where we were sunbathing and we were having a bath in the Sea. Tomorrow we're taking a treepboat on the lake next to our campside and in the evening we are going shoping and then eating ice-cream.
On Saturday we're buying some suvenires and on Sunday we're coming back home.
Anyway, I'll tell you everything, when you will arrive to me next week.
Hope to see you!
Bye for now!
Kate.

Dear Mark,
Sorry for not writing earlier but I've been busy. I'm in New York now.
I arrived two days ago. New York is fantastic, it is too big for me so I lost my way the first day. I visited a lot of place and things like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.
The food is very good, I eat at restaurant every day. If one day you visited New York, I would suggest you to try hot dogs...they are very special.
Anyway, that's all for now.
Give my love to Monica.
Best wishes.
Franco

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Times are tough. The nightly news is filled with stories of people who have lost their jobs due to the economic crisis, or lost their homes in a fire or natural disaster. Have you ever seen people who have just endured an awful situation? Some focus on what they have lost, and this is easy to understand. But other people focus on what they did not lose, and they start thinking about a better future.

One good piece of advice to remember is that you cannot always control situations or other people. The only thing you can control is your own personal reaction to bad situations. Sometimes a situation may really be overwhelming. However, in many cases, you really can influence our own moods by the way you think about negative situations.

Imagine two families: Both have lost their homes and all their belongings in a devastating storm. One family cannot mask their grief. They feel that everything they hold dear has been destroyed. They cannot imagine how they will ever be able to replace things and start over again. Their normal life seems to have been completely lost. In contrast, a second family is crying with joy. All of the people in their family are unharmed and safe. This family is just happy that everyone has survived. This family is already trying to figure out how they can recover. You can’t really blame the first family for experiencing a very normal reaction to a terrible situation. However, the second family certainly seems to be better off. They are thinking about making progress rather than focusing on the tragic events.

Though this scenario is extreme, everyone experiences setbacks that seem just awful at the time. This could be a job loss, illness, or problems with family members. Nobody gets through life without having some bad things happen. In these situations, try to focus on the steps you can take to remedy the situation, instead of how awful the setback is. By doing this, you will be laying the foundation for a better tomorrow. And you will not suffer as much pain today.

Actually, controlling how you feel and trying to maintain a positive attitude can help you through many tough situations. The bottom line is, no matter what the problem is, you are more likely to fix it if you can stay positive and work out a plan. Also, never be afraid to seek help when you need it. The advice of a friend, family member, or even a professional may be all it takes to get back on track.

It may sound like a cliché. While a positive attitude may not be the answer to every problem, it can certainly give you an advantage in surviving most of life’s minor setbacks.

(Adapted from “Select Readings – Upper Intermediate” by Linda Lee and Erik Gundersen)

Đáp án A

The bottom line is, no matter what the problem is, you are more likely to fix it if you can stay positive and work out a plan. (Điểm mấu chốt là, cho dù khó khăn của bạn là gì đi nữa, bạn đều có thể vượt qua được nếu bạn luôn lạc quan và vạch ra 1 kế hoạch).
