Dear Susan,

It’s been a long time since the last time I wrote to you. A new year is coming, so I wish you and your family happiness and health. My family spent a cheerful holiday in our cozy house. In New Year Eve we had a big party with all my relatives, we got together, talked, sang and waited for the Ñrst moment of New Year 2012. During this holiday I knew more about some interesting customs of our country that I really want to share with you. Those are the things that we should do to bring good luck for a new year. The Ñrst thing is that eating black-eyed peas are said to bring richness and safety to the coming year. Another interesting custom is eating pork on New Year’s Day because pigs eat moving forward. Therefore, those who eat pork will move forward, too. One more thing is we consider cabbage as another "good luck" vegetable. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity because we believe that cabbage is the symbol of paper money. I know that you come from Viet Nam and your lunar new year is coming soon. I hope to learn more about the things you often do and your customs to bring lucks on Tet holiday.

Love, Linh

For many people, an ordinary day stars as usual by getting up in the early moring to do exercise in
public parks, preparing for a full day of working and studying, then traveling along crowded boulevards or narrow streets filled with motor scooters and returning home after a busy day. They usually live in large house, or high-rise apartment blocks or even in a small rental room equipped with modern faccilities  like the Internet, telephone, televisikn, and so on. Industrialization and modernnization as well as global integration have big impact on lifestyle in the cities. The most noticeable impact is the Western style of clothes. Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question.

If you were to stop people in the street and ask them to name a ship that had been sunk, it is likely that nearly all of them would say the Titanic. For the sinking of the Titanic was, if not the most tragic, certainly the most famous sea disaster in the history of ocean travel.

The Titanic was built as a luxury liner, intended to be the fastest in the world, and a great deal of publicity had surrounded it. The last point probably explains why so many important people from all walks of life were on the boat when it went down.

The Titanic was on its maiden voyage to America in 1912 when it struck an iceberg and sank. Of its 2,300 passengers, more than two-thirds were drowned. Because the Titanic was thought to be virtually unsinkable, no one was prepared for the tragedy. There was total panic as very few of the passengers had bothered to learn the necessary drill in the event of trouble. There was severe shortage of lifeboats and those that were launched were still half-empty. The one point of calm was to be found in the ballroom where the band carried on playing right to the very end.

What makes the sinking of the Titanic even more tragic is the fact that warnings of icebergs had been sent, yet the liner was still continuing at full speed. In addition, one ship was only ten miles away but did not receive the distress signal.

One good thing did, however, result from the disaster. The whole question of safety at sea was looked into, resulting in much better safety measures, including stricter lifeboat regulations and the establishment of an iceberg patrol.
