SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT: ONE HOME AT A TIME Pollution can be seen not only throughout the world, but also in our own homes. It comes from household chemicals, the amount of water people use and the waste people produce and throw away. What can be done to stop this pollution? Surprisingly, a person can help save the environment by doing simple things. First, we need to recycle, which allows products to be used over and over again. Recycling can also reduce the number of trees cut down to produce paper products. It takes very little effort. It is not hard to place plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans and paper in a bin. Anyone can do it. Second, we need to watch the amount of water used in the home. It can be conserved by taking short showers instead of baths, repairing leaky faucets, using the dishwasher or washing machine only when fully loaded, or simply turning the faucet off while brushing your teeth. Third, we need to reduce waste. We need to recycle whenever possible, but should also try to use this waste effectively. For example, grass clippings and food scraps can be made into compost for plants. The average person produces 4.3 pounds of waste every day, but we can reduce that amount by recycling and reusing. If we do our part in our own homes, we can help keep the planet from becoming more polluted. Question 36: Pollution can be caused from the following sources EXCEPT______. A. water in rivers B. water from households C. wastes D. household chemicals Question 37: Recycling can help us ______. A. never cut down trees B. use products again and again C. place garbage bins easily D. produce more paper products Question 38: In order to save water, we can do all of the following things EXCEPT______. A. take short showers instead of baths B. repair leaky faucets C. fully use the washing machine D. turn the faucet off while brushing your teeth Question 39: Recycling helps to reduce waste because______. A. plants need to develop B. a person can do it in his home C. waste can be recycled and reused D. an average man produces compost for plants Question 40: The word "It" in paragraph 2 refers to ______. One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using natural gas for cooking and heating. Large amounts of natural gas are found in the United States, usually several feet below the surface of the earth. Natural gas is most often found in places where petroleum, the oil from which gasoline is made, is found. Often the natural gas must be removed before the oil itself can be reached.

For many years after natural gas was first discovered, it was thought to have no value. Finally, however, people began to understand its use and to find ways of storing it and moving it from place to place. Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking and heating. It has also been used for electric generators and hybrid cars recently. In many ways natural gas is one of our finest fuels. It can be used for cooking without making the room hot. It is cheap and can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines, some of which are hundreds of miles in length.

36. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A. natural gas is useless

B. people once wasted natural gas

C. natural gas is moved in trucks

D. natural gas is found where there is no petroleum

37. This passage as a whole is about ________.

A. discovering natural gas B. finding petroleum

C. using natural gas and petroleum D. natural gas and its use

38. Which of the following is NOT true about natural gas?

A. It is not used for heating. B. It moves through pipes.

C. It is cheap. D. It can be stored.

39. According to the passage, the easiest way to move natural gas from one place to another is ________.

A. to liquidize it and move it through pipelines.

B. to liquidize it and move it by trucks.

C. through pipelines.

D. to store it in large tanks to move.

40. How many uses of natural gas are mentioned?

PANDEMIC DISEASES

Diseases are a natural part of life on earth . If there were no diseases , the population would grow too quickly , and there would not be enough food or other resources , so in a way , diseases are natural ways of keeping the Earth in balance . But sometimes they spread very quickly and kill large numbers of people . For example , in 1918 , an outbreak of the flu spread across the world , killing over 25 million people in only six months . Such terrible outbreaks of a diseases are called pandemics

Pandemics happen when a disease changes in a way that our bodies are not prepared to fight . In 1918 , a new type of flu virus appeared . Our bodies had no way to fight this new flu virus , and so it spread very quickly and killed large numbers of people . While there have been many different pandemic diseases throughout history , all of them have a new thing in common . First , all pandemic diseases spread from one person to another very easily .

Second , while they may kill many people , they generally do not kill people very quickly . A good example of this would be the Marburg virus . The Marburg virus is an extremely infectious disease . In addition , it is deadly . About 70 - 80 % of all people who get the Marburg virus died from the disease . However , the Marburg virus has not become a pandemic because most people die within three days of getting the disease . This means that the virus does not have enough time to spread a large number of people . The flu virus of 1918 , on the other hand , generally took about a week to ten days to kill its victims , so it had more time to spread .

While we may never be able to completely stop pandemics , we can make them less common . Doctors carefully monitor new diseases that they fear could become pandemics . For example , in 2002 , and 2003 , doctors carefully watched SARS . Their health warnings may have prevented SARS from becoming a pandemic .
