Van Mieu (The Temple of Literature) was constructed in 1070 during Ly Thanh Tong's dynasty. Its original purpose was to honor Confucius. In 1076, the first university of Vietnam called Quoc Tu Giam (The Imperial Academy), was established within this temple by Emperor Ly Nhan Tong. That's the reason why the complex has the name of Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam up to now. Initially, Quoc Tu Giam was the school for princes and children of royal families and then expanded in the following year to admit top students from around the country.
Nowadays, Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam is one of the most famous tourist destinations for both Vietnamese people and foreigners. It's also a place to celebrate doctorates and high ranking scholars of Vietnam. One special thing about this place is that there are 82 Doctors' stone tablets. They are tombstones with names and origins of 1304 doctors placed on the backs of stone tortoises. If you come here at the beginning of the year or in May, when many important examinations take place, you will catch sights of numerous families and students who come and pray for luck.
Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam opens daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the entrance fee for each adult is 30,000 VND.
Bat Trang Ceramic Village

Bat Trang, a small village in the north of Vietnam, is about 13 kilometers south east of Hanoi center, on the other side of Chuong Duong Bridge.
Why is its name popular to most tourists to northern Vietnam? The answer is its ever famous ceramic and pottery products of high quality. If you have known about Vietnam, you may not be surprised that Bat Trang’s vases, bowls, dishes, and many other kinds of ceramic products have been exported worldwide. Should you would like to contemplate workers making ceramic products by hand, just come here! What’s more, you can also try it yourself!
Bat Trang village is said to be established in 14th or 15th century in several documents. However, according to the villagers, the village perhaps appeared earlier. There are always two stories concerning the village origin.
One of these tells that under Ly dynasty, in 1100, when the nation was in its independence and initial growth period, there were 3 scholars who came back from their mission trip to China bringing the ceramic craft industry learned there back to Vietnam and taught the people of Bat Trang.
In the other story, in the village history dates back to the 10th century, when King Ly Cong Uan relocated the capital in Thang Long. With the establishment and development of the capital, many businessmen, crafters from many areas come to settle down here to work and trade. In Bat Trang, there was a lot of white clay, so that many potters, among who was Nguyen Ninh Trang family, came and built the kilns here.
Accordingly, Bat Trang has gradually changed from a normal ceramic and pottery village into a famous ceramic and pottery centre until now.

Every room in my house is just enough for our activities, so we do not have much space for the living room. However, we try our best to decorate it because it is where the whole family gathers after a long day staying outside. We lay down a thick rug on the floor, it both helps to decorate and keep the floor safe from the scratches. To save some space, we put the TV and the loud speakers on the wall. The Play Station, DVD player and other electronic devices are put in a small cabinet in the corner of the room, and we only take them out whenever we want to play something. In the middle of the room is a glass table, we put on the surface a bottle of fresh water and some cups so everyone can have a quick drink before leaving or after coming back to the house. Behind the table is a big white couch, and it can be considered as the biggest thing in the living room. My mother loves the pastel tone, so the walls are painted in cream color; and they all go very well with the couch. We do not have any window there, so we install an air conditioner to keep the atmosphere cool. We hang some pictures of landscape as well as painting on the walls to make the room livelier. There are also a pot of a small plant in the corner of the room, so we can get some fresh air from it. Every night, we would gather to watch TV or sing karaoke, and it is my favorite time of the day. Although the living room is no too big, our family will always have good times there together.

I live in a pretty big house in the countryside since we also live with our grandparents, and the biggest as well as the most beautiful room in our house is the living room. We have a tradition to visit others house in our free times, so the living is specialized to welcome our guests. We do not put the TV, loud speakers or the DVD player there, because that is the space for us to talk to each other. At the end of the room, we put a big altar which is used to worship our ancestors. My mother takes a very good care of it since she changes the water and incenses every day. My father installs some lights to make it brighter and warmer. It is beautifully carved into a dragon which the body is the back, the head is the place to rest our heads, and the claws are the four legs of the couch. The table surface is decorated with conch, and it makes the complete look to not look too heavy. On the table are a big flower vase and a set of tea pot and cups, which is used to serve the best tea to our guests. There is a big window behind the couch, and it gives the room plenty sources of light. The curtains are in light green color, and go very well with the dark green paint of the walls. On the walls are some of our family pictures as well as some pieces of my grandfather’s calligraphy. He has the ability to write Chinese and Vietnamese words in a very beautiful way, so we frame some of his works and put them on the walls. It can be said that the living room represent the whole family, so we always try to take a very good care of it.
