Vua Hùng thứ mười tám có một người con gái xinh đẹp tuyệt trần tên là Mị Nương. Vua rất thương con và muốn tìm cho Mị Nương một người chồng xứng đáng.
Mị Nương càng lớn càng đẹp. Đến tuổi trăng rằm, không biết bao nhiêu chàng trai dòng dõi mong được lấy nàng làm vợ. Tiếng tăm về người con gái đẹp người đẹp nết vang xa tới tận núi Tản Viên, nơi Sơn Tinh – vị thần của núi và đất sinh sống. Một buổi sáng, Sơn Tinh quyết định cưỡi hổ trắng oai phong lẫm liệt đến cầu hôn Mị Nương. Cũng ngày hôm đó, một chàng trai cưỡi rồng nước uy nghi to lớn, tự xưng là Thuỷ Tinh cũng đến cầu hôn Mị Nương. Vua Hùng băn khoăn, ai cũng tài giỏi, biết gả con gái yêu cho ai bây giờ ? Cuối cùng, vua quyết định, hai người so tài, ai thắng sẽ được lấy Mị Nương. Lập tức, Thuỷ Tinh hô mưa gọi gió, sấm chớp nổ đùng đùng, cả thành Phong Châu như muốn nổ tung vì lũ quét, khiến cho không chỉ các lạc hầu lạc tướng kinh hãi mà đến ngay cả vua Hùng cũng phải run sợ. Sơn Tinh cũng chẳng thua kém, chàng chỉ tay vể phía Đông, phía Đông mọc núi đồi, chàng chỉ tay về phía Tây, phía Tây nổi cồn bãi. Ai ai cũng đều thán phục. Vua Hùng muốn gả Mị Nương cho Sơn Tinh nhưng lại sợ Thuỷ Tinh nổi giận. Sau một hồi bàn bạc với các lạc hầu lạc tướng, vua phán: "Cả hai chàng đều tài giỏi nhưng ta chỉ có một mụn con, vì vậy, ngày mai, ai đến sớm, mang được đầy đủ một trăm ván cơm nếp, một trăm nệp bánh chưng, voi chín ngà. gà chín cựa, ngựa chín hồng mao sẽ được đón Mị Nương về làm vợ".
Sáng hôm sau, khi tia nắng đầu tiên của ngày mới chưa xuất hiện, khi bầu trời còn đang đắm chìm trong màn sương đêm thì Sơn Tinh cùng đoàn tuỳ tùng đã đến rước Mị Nương về núi Tản. Thuỷ Tinh đến sau, không lấy được vợ liền đùng đùng nổi giận, sai đoàn thuỷ quái đánh đuổi Sơn Tinh. Sơn Tinh gọi một đoàn quân hùng dũng gồm hùm beo gấu rắn.., lên đánh lại Thuỷ Tinh. Trời đất tối sầm, những tia sét ngang dọc lượn trên bầu trời như những con rắn khổng lồ đang uốn lượn như muốn xé tan bầu trời. Sơn Tinh cùng quân lính liên tục ném đá vào lũ thuỷ quái. Sau một hồi giao chiến, Thuỷ Tinh bèn dâng nước lên cao, nhấn chìm mọi nhà cửa ruộng đồng cây cối,… chẳng bao lâu, cả thành Phong Châu ngập chìm trong biển nước. Nhân dân cùng muông thú vội chạy lên núi cao trú ẩn. Sơn Tinh hoá phép cho đồi núi luôn cao hơn nước của Thuỷ Tinh. Thuý Tinh dâng nước cao bao nhiêu, Sơn Tinh lại dâng núi cao bấy nhiêu. Trận chiến diễn ra hết ngày này sang ngày khác. Thuỷ Tinh dần kiệt sức, đành phải rút quân về. Mọi người xuống núi dựng lại nhà cửa, vỡ ruộng khai hoang.
Từ đó, năm nào Thuỷ Tinh cũng dâng nước đánh Sơn Tinh, nhưng đều thua trận. Ngày nay, nhân dân ta vẫn đắp đê, trồng rừng, hằng năm vẫn chung sức chống lại lũ lụt, như xưa kia, ông cha ta và Sơn Tinh đã chống lại Thuỷ Tinh.
