Bài nghe:

Robert Wadlow was born in February 1918, in a town of Alton, Illinois, in the USA. He grew up and went to school there. And people in the town loved him. He grew very quickly. At the age of 6, he was taller than his father. That was a problem at school, so they made a special desk for him.

Robert was the oldest of the five children. He has two brothers and two sisters who were a normal height. When Robert left school at the age of 17, he was 2,48 metres tall. He went to the university but it was difficult for him, so he left.

Robert became famous in the USA when he appeared in a famous circus. People called him the Alton Giant, the Giant of Illinois. People also call him the gentle giant because he spoke very quietly.

Robert never stopped growing. Robert got a job with a shoes company that made his special shoes and travelled around the country with his father. They went to 800 different town in the USA, and Robert became more famous.

Sadly, Robert died at the age of 22, because of the problem with one of his feet. People were very sad when Robert died.

Woman: Hello and welcome to wildlife. Today's program is about animals and what they can do. Okay, let's start with the big animal. Is it true that all elephants can hear long distances with their ears and their feet?

Man: Yes, it is. They can hear other elephants by feeling sounds in the ground with their feet.

Woman: Wow, that's amazing. Here's another big animal. That's the sound of gorilla animals which can grow to around 250 kilos. They're big, strong and intelligent and that helps them survive.

Man: Yes, but small animals can also survive. Look! I've got one here.

Woman: Ohhh… I don't like scorpions. Tell me can they kill people?

Man: Some of them can, and this one can.

Woman: But it's very small.

Man: Yes, some of the smallest ones are the most dangerous.

Woman: Oh… I prefer this animal.

Man: What's that?

Woman: A camel. Camels have got very different skills. They don't drink a lot. They can survive 6 months without water.

Man: Okay, now it's my turn. Eagles can see small animals from a distance of one kilometer. Ostriches can’t fly but they’re the tallest heaviest and fastest birds. They can run more than 60 kilometers an hour.

Woman: That is amazing. So, what can humans do?

Man: We can communicate.

Woman: But a lot of animals communicate. Listen. Whales. Monkeys.

Man: Yes, but we can speak and I think that is our most important skill.

Woman: Okay, now let's speak....

At noon I listen to the gentle country music to relax, and classical music is the first choice at bedtime so I can fall asleep easily. Some of my favorite singers are Adele, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, etc. They also help me read more in English about international music news. Music is such a useful tool for entertaining, and I will maintain this daily routine as a way to both learn relax.

English is very interesting. It is not difficult to learn English well. However, it is important to find the most effective way to learn the language. I rarely look up new words in the dictionary, but I often try to guess their meanings in the reading. At first, I found it a little difficult because I could hardly understand everything that I read. But gradually I could get the general idea of th reading or the main information the reading passage gave. I never use an English-Vietnamese dictionary, instead I used an English-English dictionary, and this helps me a lot. In this way, I can use the new vocabulary correctly and naturally. I also keep my diary, and write short stories in English to improve my writing skill. As for listening, I listen to music and news programs boardcast in English on TV and on the radio. It is an interesting way to pratice listening. Modern equipment can help a lot in listening. For example, I use an iPod to record the news so that I can listen to it again and then I record voice and correct myself. I've joined an English-speaking club to better my speaking. I can make myself well understood when I speak to native speakers. I think in the future everybody in Vietnam can communicate with each other well in English.

HOW TO IMPROVE ENGLISH COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Find native English speakers

In certain areas it’s the hardest thing to do, but it’s the best use of your time. Talking to actual native speakers is the most effective way to improve your English skills, speaking or otherwise. So whether you have to Skype them, call them, or beg them to speak to you, do so. Your progress will be faster this way than any other.

Listen to the music of English

No, not English music, the music of English - its lilt, its prosody, the sing-songy-ness of it. The intonation. Even if you speak perfect English technically, if you speak it like a robot you’re not speaking it the way it’s meant to be spoken.

Slow down

Above all, if you want to be understood, slow down. The more clearly you speak, the better chance your listener has of understanding you. It’s tempting to get nervous and want to speed up to get it all over with, but you can’t do that! Clarity is key - for some native English speakers, too!

Record yourself

Though we hear ourselves all the time, we really don’t know quite what we sound like. So record yourself! What are the weak and strong points you hear in your speech? And then you can concentrate on what you need to work on.

Speak English at home

This is the biggest, easiest mistake to make. You go about your day, you’re on the job working partly in English, you go to your English class, and then you go home and revert back to your native tongue. While you may be making slow improvements, you’ll never get past that dreaded lingual plateau. Make a point to speak it at home, too. Have only English at the dinner table. Stick to English TV at home. Make it as 24/7 as possible.
