XV. Read the passage and answer the question.

A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the air by your own energy needs. You need transportation, electricity, food, clothing, and other goods. CO2 is produced by the burning of fossil fuels which is used to provide energy for your homes, by the cars you travel in and by the manufacture and transport of goods you buy.

Carbon dioxide is also called greenhouse gas, which causes global warming. That is the reason why the carbon footprint is a very poweful tool to understand the impact of personal behaviours on global warming. If you want to contribute to stop global warming, the reduction of your personal carbon footprint is essential. Fist, you can reduce your carbon footprint by driving less. When possible, walk or ride a bike to avoid carbon emissions completely or use public transport in order to decrease CO emissions. Second, support using clean energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal energy and biogas. Finally, reusing or recycling items you no longer use is also a good way to reduce your carbon footprint.

1. What is a carbon footprint?

2. How is CO2 produced?

3. What can carbon footprint cause?

4. What should you do to stop global warming?

That's why the David Suzuki Foundation and Bullfrog Power are partnering to offer you a quick and easy way to switch your home to clan energy and be part of the solution to climate change. When you choose green energy, Bullfrog's generators put clean, renewable electricity and/or green natural gas (produced from organic waste, not fracking) into the grid or pipeline to match the amount of power or natural gas your home uses. Bullfrog ensures the energy going into our energy systems - on your behalf -is from clean, green sources. Bullfrog’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power from new Canadian renewable energy facilities, with at least 50 per cent directly from your region.

Non-renewable energy sources are those that take millions of years to form and will run out some day. It is energy that comes from fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas. Fossil fuels are mainly made up of carbon and were formed millions of years ago. The chemical reaction which takes place when we burn fossil fuels releases carbon compounds such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide is one of the green house gases which is contributing to global warming and air pollution. On the other hand, renewable energy sources will never run out, are better for the environment and do not cause pollution. Renewable energy is often called green energy because it is a natural energy, always available and does not have to be formed like nonrenewable energy. The green energy is always there. For example, the Sun consistently shines, water is abundant, and the winds blow throughout the year. The five types include solar, energy from the Sun; geothermal, energy from heat within the Earth; hydroelectric, energy from moving water; biomass, energy from dead plants and microorganisms and finally, energy from the wind.

A natural gas flame
Ervins Strauhmanis, Flickr (link is external)
A gas that is made up mostly of methane and found near other fossil fuels, like coal. Methanogenic processes occurring in landfills and marshes also produce natural gas. Like petroleum, natural gas must first be processed before we can use it as a fuel. It is important to remove most of the other components of natural gas until it is almost purely methane. When combusted, natural gas produces only about half the greenhouse gas emissions as coal does, making it a popular fossil fuel in our increasingly carbon-conscious society. Take a look at these oil- and gas-related maps (link is external) to learn more about natural gas production and reserves in the United States.
