The global warming controversy concerns the public debate over whether global warming is occurring, how much has occurred in modern times, what has caused it, what its effects will be, whether any action can or should be taken to curb it, and if so what that action should be. In the scientific literature, there is a very strong consensus that global surface temperatures have increased in recent decades and that the trend is caused by human-induced emissions of Greenhouse glasses No scientific body of national or international standing disagrees with this view, though a few organizations with members in extractive industries hold non-committal positions, and some have tried to persuade the public that climate change is not happening, or if the climate is changing it is not because of human influence, attempting to sow doubt in the scientific consensus.

Read the following passage and do the tasks below:

Day after day we hear about how anthropogenic development is causing global warming. According to an increasingly vocal minority, however, we should be asking ourselves how much of this is media hype and how much is based on real evidence. It seems, as so often is the case that it depends on which expert you listen to, or which statistics you study.

Yes, it is true that there is a mass of evidence to indicate that the world is getting warmer, with one of the world's leading weather predictors stating that air temperatures have shown an increase of just under half a degree Celsius since the beginning of the twentieth century. And while this may not sound like anything worth losing sleep over, the international press would have us believe that the consequences could be devastating. Other experts, however, are of the opinion that what we are seeing is just part of a natural upward and downward swing that has always been part of the cycle of global weather. An analysis of the views of major meteorologists in the United States showed that less than 20% of them believed that any change in temperature over the last hundred years was our own fault - the rest attributed it to natural cyclical changes.

There is, of course, no denying that we are still at a very early stage in understanding weather. The effects of such variables as rainfall, cloud formation, the seas and oceans gases such as methane and ozone, or even solar energy are still not really understood, and therefore the predictions that we make using them cannot always be relied on. Dr. James Hansen, in 1988, was predicting that the likely effects of global warming would be a rising of world temperature which would have disastrous consequences for mankind: “a strong cause and effect relationship between the current climate and human alteration of the atmosphere ". He has now gone on record as stating that using artificial models of climate as a way of predicting change is all but impossible. In fact, he now believes that, rather than getting hotter, our planet is getting greener as a result of the carbon dioxide increase, with the prospect of increasing vegetation in areas which in recent history have been frozen wastelands.

In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that as our computer-based weather models have become more sophisticated, the predicted rises in temperature have been cut back. In addition, if we look at the much reported rise in global temperature over the last century, a close analysis reveals that the lion's share of that increase, almost three quarters in total, occurred before man began to "poison" his world with industrial processes and the accompanying greenhouse gas emissions in the second half of the twentieth century.

So should we pay any attention to those stories that scream out at us from billboards and television news headlines, claiming that man, with his inexhaustible dependence on oil-based machinery and ever more sophisticated forms of transport is creating a nightmare level of greenhouse gas emissions, poisoning his environment and ripping open the ozone layer? Doubters point to scientific evidence, which can prove that, of all the greenhouse gases, only two percent come from man-made sources, the rest resulting from natural emissions. Who, then, to believe: the environmentalist exhorting us to leave the car at home, to buy re-usable products packaged in recycled paper and to plant trees in our back yard? Or the skeptics, including, of course, a lot of big businesses who have most to lose, when they tell us that we are making a mountain out of a molehill? And my own opinion? The jury's still out as far as I am concerned!

Question 1-6: Choose the appropriate letters (A, B, C or D), based on the information from the passage.

1. The author ........

A believes that man is causing global warming

B believes that global warming is a natural process

C is sure what the causes of global warming are

D does not say what he believes the causes of global warming are

2. As to the cause of global warming, the author believes that ........

A occasionally the facts depend on who you are talking to

B the facts always depend on who you are talking to

C often the facts depend on which expert you listen to

D you should not speak to experts

3. More than 80% of the top meteorologists in the United States are of the opinion that .........

A global warming should make us lose sleep

B global warming is not the result of natural cyclical changes, but man-made

4. Our understanding of weather ...........

A leads to reliable predictions

B is variable

C cannot be denied

A it is nearly impossible to predict weather change using artificial models

B the consequences of global warming would be disastrous for mankind

C there is a significant link between the climate now, and man's changing of the atmosphere

Of course, there are all different kinds of environmental problems and I do not know which problem you want discussed. I will write about global warming.

One of the major environmental problems today is global warming. It is caused by an excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This causes what is known as a "greenhouse effect."

The major effect of this greenhouse effect is to raise the temperature of the world as a whole. If this continues, climate patterns around the world will change. In addition, sea levels will probably rise, which will be bad for low-lying areas.

There are many possible solutions, all of them have to do with emitting less carbon dioxide -- either by using less energy or by finding energy sources that do not emit carbon dioxide.

The environment is everything around us, both natural and made by man. A major problem in the world today is the destruction of the natural environment.

This is a complicated problem. We burn fuel, and this causes air pollution. We throw away lastic bags, containing toys and other objects. These stay in the environment, they are not like paper or wood that slowly disappear. We have made thousands of new chemicals. Factories that make or use chemicals always have chemical wastes. These are often poisonous, and they also stay in the environment.

Since 1945 several countries have been testing nuclear bombs in the air and underground. The explosions in the air cause nuclear fallout. The fallout causes cancer and kills animals and people. Nuclear power plants that make electricity also produce dangerous wastes and have accidents that can be very disastrous.

* Choose the correct answer

3. The nuclear fallout causes

A. smoke from vehicles

B. Burning fuel, plastic bags and wastes from factories

C. A and B

My favourite subject in school is English. It is quite easy and pleasant to study it. English is used in each field of life and it is useful to know it.

Most of web sides are in English. It is nice to be able to use such a sides like yahoo, msn and english Wikipedia. I can get a lot of information and news, which are not available on polish sides.

Next plus: I can use english books and magazines. Sometimes I like to download e-books and magazines in pdf. It is effectively way to study English in home.

Using English I can communicate with many peoples. I can use Skype and ICQ to talk and chat and get new contacts.

I can use many applications and play games. I have used Windows XP and Office for two months and it was quite easy.

Most of movies are in English. I like to watch them without subtitles. If I can I always switch the polish dubbing off ? I hate it.

The last advantage to know English is I can talk with all people talking English. This holidays when I was in Gdańsk somebody asked all people: ?Do you speak English?? Everybody talked ?No? and ?Nie wiem o co chodzi.?. When she came to me and asked the question ?Do you speak English?? I could say ?Yes, how can I help you?? She told ?How can I get to the bus station?? I told ?Can you see this building? The station is behind it. Please go this way?. She smiled to me and walked away. I was happy that I could help.

As you can see English is useful in life. All of us study it in everyday situations and activities. The language is quite simple and logic. I use it all the time. This is why I like English and it is my favourite subject in school.

It is English subject that I like best in school. I like English because it helps me open the big world. First of all, I can talk with people who are in the English-speaking world. Secondly, I can find many documents written by English for studuing. Thirdly, I can watch movie and news without subtitle. Last but not least, it makes me interesting when studying. To study it well, I sometimes take a note and past it in somewhere in my room. I always do all exercises before going to school. And I am very enthusiastic in the class. English is known to be very dificult and many students hate studying it. It my feeling that the problem is the methods teaching of Vietnam is not suitable. Student must study grammar hardly. I hope it will change in the future. In short, English is very necessary for modern life, I hope all students find in interesting.
