Thousands of people in Calcutta, India, have no jobs and no proper homes. They live crowded together in homes made out of mats, boxes and rusty sheets of tin. Many have to camp permanently in the railway stations, cooking, eating, sleeping and nursing their babies there. Babies are born in the streets and people die there too.

As many as seventeen out of every hundred families live in the streets, having nowhere else to go. About one hundred thousand people sleep in the streets every night. Many of these people are sick, for in a hot and damp climate, fevers and diseases spread quickly. All the time, more and more people pour into the city, hoping to find a job and a share of the city's wealth.

Nothing the government does, no matter how hard it tries by providing houses, schools and medical services, ever quite keeps up with the increasing population. Most people have become accustomed to the sight of these homeless thousands and hardly notice them.

Decide if the statements below are true (T) or false (F)

Canning is a method of preserving food over extended periods of time. The process involves sealing food in containers and heating it in order to kill bacteria that could eventually cause spoilage. While most canned food is produced by commercial companies, some is done at home. Homegrown fruits and vegetables such as apples and tomatoes are the most popular foods to can. Even certain kinds of meats are suitable for canning. However, it is not advisable to heat products such as avocados because of the changes in taste and texture that occur. Other foods, including cucumbers and peppers, can be canned only if they are first pickled and then cooked at very low temperatures. Properly canned food can be saved for as long as three years. If not properly sealed, the food can be spoiled by the growth of organisms. In severe case, bacteria can cause a fatal form of poisoning called "botulism". Fire was very important to man. He needed fire to keep himself warm at night. He used fire to cook his food. He used fire to frighten away enemies and wild animals. In some parts of the world he used fire to signal messages. Red Indians, for example, used fire to make smoke signals. In some other countries people lit fires to warn their friends of danger.

Fire was very also used to give light. Before the invention of oil lamp, men used burning sticks as torches. And before man discovered gas and electricity, he hung small fires in wire baskets from posts to light the streets.

One man even used fire to tell the time. He invented a candle clock. He made a candle that took exactly twelve hours to burn. Then he marked this candle in twelve equal parts.
