III. READING

Read the passage carefully, then decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).

Learning a foreign language is, in some ways, like learning how to fly. There are some differences, but there is a very important similarity. It is this: learning how to do these things needs a lot of practice. It is never enough to read a book on how to fly a plane. A book can give you a lot of information about how to fly, but if you only read that book, then try to fly without practice, you will kill yourself. The same is true of learning language. For example, can you speak English well without having lots of practice? “ Practice makes perfect” is what every learner of a foreign language.

27. Learning a foreign language and learning to fly are the same in some ways.

28. Information about flying from books is enough for someone to fly a plane.

29. You can learn English well only by reading books in English.

30. Talking to a native speaker can be a good way to speak a foreign language well.

Choose the option marked A, B, C, or D that best completes each of the following sentences.

My aunt is one of those people who can talk to anyone about anything. If she goes to a party where she doesn't know any of the people, she just walks up to the first person that she sees and introduces herself. And yet she doesn't seem to talk about deeply important things like politics or religion. She always starts off on something very obvious like the other person's job. Very soon she's talking as if she's known the other person for years. I asked her once what her secret was. She said that the most important thing in a conversation was listening. People love to talk about themselves, so if you allow them to do so, it's very easy to keep a conversation going. You have to listen very carefully and ask questions. And you have to look interested, too. So don't keep looking at other things in the room while you're talking to someone.

Another thing that I've noticed is that she only pays people compliments. She says: “I like your hair. Which hairdresser do you go to?” or “You look very well. Have you been on holiday?” Friendly messages like this seem to provide an easy way into a conversation.

A. Looking very interested in his or her story B. Looking at other things in the room

III.

28. Information about flying from books is enough for someone to fly a plane. F

29. You can learn English well only by reading books in English. F

30. Talking to a native speaker can be a good way to speak a foreign language well. T

Question 33. My aunt thinks that it's very easy to keep a conversation going if you__________.

A. let people talk about themselves B. let people hear about yourself

C. talk about politics or religion D. ask people about their secrets

Question 35. What should you NOT do when you have a conversation with someone?

A. Looking very interested in his or her story B. Looking at other things in the room

C. Listening very carefully and asking questions D. Paying him or her compliments

Question 36. According to the passage, my aunt often starts a conversation by talking about ________.
