There's a lot of good stuff on TV, so I watch something most days of the week. It's the easiest thing to do when I get home from work and I’m too tired to go out or read a book. I watch quite a lot of documentaries and the news because I like to know what's happening in the world, and I'm also a big fan of reality shows like Big Brother.
In Big Brother they get real people together in a house for a few weeks, and because the house is full of cameras you can watch how they behave. Sometimes the people are celebrities. As a viewer you can decide which of the people you don't like, and then vote to evict them from the house - I love that!
Patricia
Most of the time I’m too busy to watch TV, and anyway there’s so much rubbish on these days. Apart from the news – which I find interesting, it’s difficult to find anything intelligent on any of the channels.
What I really hate are those reality shows, like the one where they put people in a house for a few weeks and then film how they behave, as if they were animals in a zoo. From the little I’ve seen, it seems the people who make these programmes always put some really ignorant or selfish people in the house, and then expect the viewers to find their behaviour entertaining. I find it depressing.
Question: Why does Stuart not go out or read books?

THE BENEFITS OF TV

TV is now taking on more and more importance in our lives. For many it is now the main source of entertainment and they use it as a form of relaxation after a hard day at work or school. It is a way of forgetting about reality for a few hours. Most people like to watch comedy programmes or game shows, which do not require too much concentration. However, there are also many people who see TV differently. They use it to find out about the outside world, as a source of information. They switch it on when it’s time for the news or when there is a documentary on an interesting subject. Some people even learn history and literature by watching historical dramas or adaptations of novels. A thirteen-year-old girl who was found to have a very good general knowledge and was thought to read a lot said, “But I learnt it all from TV.” This is one interesting advantage of TV that many parents overlook.

Annette is very good at playing tennis. She often dreams of becoming a professional tennis player one day, but she knows that the chance of making a living as a professional player is very small, indeed. Even though Annette is only interested in playing tennis all day long, she knows that it is not a pleasant way to living if you have to spend all your time practising. Modern methods of training are so hard, and take up so much time that you may miss a lot of time at school and for Annette, tennis is not a reason for leaving school before she takes her exams.

LIFE IN AN ISLAND

Off the west coast of Scotland, there are many small island communities. Life in these communities is very different from life in the big cities. People from the cities often say that life in the islands is slow and boring. But the island people tell a different story.

Many families live by fishing or farming, and people usually have more than one job. Many families have rooms for tourists who come to visit the islands in summer. The tourists go walking and fishing and play sports. Sometimes they study Gaelic, the local language. And they stay in a 'bed and breakfast' with a local family or in one of the small island hotels. In the long summer evenings, people meet and talk together. They tell stories of where they live and what they do.

The children on the islands go to small local schools. They have their classes in English and Gaelic. Sometimes there are only eight or ten children in one school! When they are twelve, they go to secondary school in a bigger town on the island. When they finish that school, they decide whether to go to university in a big city, or to stay and work on the island.

1. City people and island people have the same opinion about island life. ____

2. People on the islands mainly do one job. ____

3. Tourists can stay with local families in summer. ____

4. Children on the islands speak two languages at school. ____

5. Gaelic is the local language. ____
