I.                Read the following passage and choose the best answers.

Sometimes you know things about people the first time you see them, for example, that you want to be friends with them or that you don't trust them. But perhaps this kind of intuition isn't as hard to explain as it may seem. For instance, people give out body language signals all the time. The way you hold your body, head and arms tells people about your mood. If you hold your arms tightly at your sides, or fold them across your chest, people will generally feel that you are being defensive. Holding your head to one side shows interest in the other, while an easy, open posture indicates that you are self-confident. All this affects the way you feel about someone.

Also, a stranger may remind you of a meeting with someone. This may be because of something as simple as the fact that he or she is physically similar to someone who treated you well or badly. Your feelings about a stranger could be influenced by a smell in the air that brings to mind a place where you were happy as a child. Since even a single word can bring back a memory such as that, you may never realize it is happening.

1.     What does the word "open" in the passage most closely mean?

A. Unrestrained                         B. Relaxed                                C. Confined                         D. Unlimited

2.     What influences your impression of a person you meet the first time?

A. Intuition                                B. Familiarity                             C. Knowledge                      D. Feeling

3.     What one feels about a stranger may be influenced by something that ______.

A. strengthens one's past behaviours                             B. reminds one of one's past treatment

C. revives one's past memories                                     D. points to one's childhood

4.     What does the second paragraph discuss?

A. Meanings of signals one implies towards a stranger.

B. Factors that may influence one's feelings about a stranger.

C. How people usually behave to a stranger.                              D. Factors that cause people to act differently.

5.     Intuition described in the passage can be explained by means of _______.

A. styles                                   B. languages                             C. patterns                          D. behaviours

Find native English speakers      In certain areas it’s the hardest thing to do, but it’s the best use of your time. Talking to actual native speakers is the most effective way to improve your English skills, speaking or otherwise. So whether you have to Skype them, call them, or beg them to speak to you, do so. Your progress will be faster this way than any other.

Listen to the music of English    No, not English music, the music of English - its lilt, its prosody, the sing-songy-ness of it. The intonation. Even if you speak perfect English technically, if you speak it like a robot you’re not speaking it the way it’s meant to be spoken.

Slow down    Above all, if you want to be understood, slow down. The more clearly you speak, the better chance your listener has of understanding you. It’s tempting to get nervous and want to speed up to get it all over with, but you can’t do that! Clarity is key - for some native English speakers, too!

Record yourself   Though we hear ourselves all the time, we really don’t know quite what we sound like. So record yourself! What are the weak and strong points you hear in your speech? And then you can concentrate on what you need to work on.

Speak English at home    This is the biggest, easiest mistake to make. You go about your day, you’re on the job working partly in English, you go to your English class, and then you go home and revert back to your native tongue. While you may be making slow improvements, you’ll never get past that dreaded lingual plateau. Make a point to speak it at home, too. Have only English at the dinner table. Stick to English TV at home. Make it as 24/7 as possible.

Talking to actual native speakers is the least effective way to improve your English skills

CAN YOU ADVISE ME?

I am writing to you becasue I would like become a hournalist when I leave school. Since you are the editor ò the local newspaper, I hope that you many be able to give me some advice about what I should to do. I have written some articles during my spare time and I am enclosing two of them. I hope that you won't mind looking at them and telling me whether you think they are good or not. I would appreciate any comments you make because I am keen to learn. I also wonder if you could advise me about a few other matters. Do you think it is the better to do a course in journalism at a college ỏ to try to get a job as a junior reporter as soon as I finish school? Do newpapers prefer to employ people with a qualification in hournalism or to train them while they are actually doing the jobs? Another question I would like to ask is, would you advise me to specialise in one kind of report, such as politics, or it is advisable to know a little bit about a lot of subjects? I am sure that you are very busy but I would be grateful for any advise you could give me. Finally, would it be possible to come into the newpaper offices one day so that I could see how a real newpaper operate? I would welcome the opportunity to do that.
