Black Friday is the Friday which follows Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday is celebrated in the United States as an official beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On the day, most shops open extremely early and offer promotional sales to boost the consumption, which is similar to Boxing Day after Christmas Day in Britain and many Commonwealth nations. For years, it was quite usual for retailers to open their shops at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many opened at 5:00 a.m. or even 4:00 a.m. The year 2011 witnessed a new extreme when several retailers opened at midnight. For non-retailer employees, they may have a day off work or choose to take a day from their annual leave on Black Friday. Some use this to make trips to see family members or friends who live in other areas or to go on vacation. Others use it to start shopping for the Christmas season. Black Friday is not a federal holiday, but is a public holiday in California and some other states in the United States.

Black Friday, to the police, is not a term of endearment. The name of the day originated in Philadelphia where it was first used by the Police Department to describe massive traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks as the downtown stores were mobbed from opening to closing. Nowadays, Black Friday crowds that are hunting for bargains still give the police headaches. However, retailers do not appreciate the negative connotation associated with Black Friday. Therefore, there exists another explanation as to why it is called Black Friday. As they might put it, the term Black Friday came from an old way of recording business accounts: losses were recorded in red ink and profits in black ink. Therefore, an alternative explanation was made that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss, or "in the red", from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point where retailers begin to turn a profit, or get "in the black". It goes without saying that Black Friday positively means a profitable Friday to the retail industry.

* Decide whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F).
Good evening. Welcome to our Science for Fun Program. This week, we’ve received a lot of questions asking about life on the moon. We’ve talked to some experts and this is what we’ve found out. There is no water or air on the moon. It is all silent because there is no air. Of course, there will be no music, no
sounds. There are no rivers and no lakes. At night, it is very cold. The temperature goes down 1510C below zero. But during the day the temperature rises to 1000C above zero.
There are great round holes on the moon. They look like big lakes. They are called craters. There are more than 30,000 craters on the moon. There are also high mountains. The highest mountains on the moon are about 26,000 feet or 8,000 meters high.
And here is something very interesting to know: on the moon you weigh one sixth of what you weigh on earth. If you weigh 50 kilos, on the moon you will weigh only a little more than 8 kilos. You will be able to jump very high, even higher than an Olympic Champion. You can take very long steps as well. And …
may be you want won’t sleep very well because one day on the moon lasts for 2 weeks.
So, is there life on the moon? I’ll leave the question for you to answer yourself.
……01. There is no air on the moon.
……02. There are rivers and lakes on the moon.
……03. There are no sounds on the moon.
……04. It is very cold at night on the moon.
……05. During the day the temperature is even lower.
……06. There are great round holes on the moon.
……07. There are no mountains on the moon.
……08. You will weigh 8 kilos heavier on the moon.
……09. You will be able to jump very high on the moon.
……10. One day on the moon lasts for two weeks.

There some differences, but there is a very important similarity. It is this: learning how to do such things needs lots of practice. It is never enough simply to “know” something. You must be able to “do” things with what to know. For example, it is not enough simply to read a book on how to fly an aeroplane. A book can give you lots of information about how to fly, but if you only read a book and then try to fly without a great deal of practice first, you will crash and kill yourself. The same is true of learning the piano or learning a foreign language. Can you speak English well without having lots of practice? “Practice makes perfect” is what every learner of a foreign language should know. 1. Learning a foreign language and learning to fly are the same in an important way. 2. Information about flying from books is enough for someone to fly a plane. 3. You can learn English well only by reading books in English. 4. Talking to a native speaker can be a good way to speak a foreign language well. 5. Practicing a foreign language regularly makes you very good at it
