Các cách viết tắt thường được sử dụng khi nhắn tin, gửi thư điện tử cho bạn bè, trò chuyện online trên các trang mạng xã hội, hay viết blog.

* Có những cách viết tắt chung mà ai cũng hiểu, nhưng cũng có những từ được viết tắt theo cách riêng của mỗi cá nhân hoặc một nhóm người.

1. Một số quy tắc viết tắt cơ bản

- Viết tắt sử dụng những chữ cái đầu của các từ được viết hoa.

WBU?=> What about you?
LOL=> Laughing out loud/ Lots of love

* Một cách viết tắt có thể diễn giải thành nhiều cách hiểu khác nhau, tùy theo ngữ cảnh của cuộc trò chuyện.

TTYL. LOL.=> Talk/ type to you later. Lots of love.
Nói chuyện với bạn sau nhé. Thân ái.
OMG! LOL!=> Oh my gosh! Laughing out loud!
Ôi trời ơi! Cười chết mất!

- Dùng các biểu tượng, ký hiệu để viết tắt.

<3=> love
@=> at

- Dùng những chữ cái đồng âm thay cho những từ cần viết.

r=> are
ne=> any

- Viết tắt từ bằng các biến thể các chữ cái khiến chúng không đúng về mặt chính tả những vẫn gần tương ứng về âm.

nth=> nothing
NUFF=> enough

Dear Donna,

Thanks for your letter. I'm pleased to hear you had an enjoyable Mother's Day.

We received our second semester report last month, I got good grades for Math and E, but my literature, physics results were poor.

We will be free in a few days a week. It's almost Mid Autumn. Everyone usually calls " Moon Festival " in VN. I think i told you about it in my last letter. I am going to go to Da Lat with my aunt and uncle by bus this afternoon.
