. What can the animals or the leaves in the pictures do that people can't? Name some things people have invented to make up for what they cannot do. Discuss your ideas with a partner and then read the text.

People often use the natural world as inspiration for their inventions. By observing animals and plants, they design new products to serve humans. Here are some examples.

Animals can do many things humans cannot, flying or staying underwater for a long time. The aeroplane, with its swings and shape imitating those of a bird, is one of the greatest inventions in our history. Thanks to it, people can travel long distances in the air. This has helped to develop trade and tourism. The submarine, which can travel
underwater, imitates a dolphin's shape. Submarines are very useful for scientists to learn about the undersea world. Plants around us are also great sources of ideas for other wonderful inventions. The self-cleaning glass window and the fabric used to make umbrellas are both inspired by the smooth leaves of a lotus plant, with their ability to wash away dirt in the rain. Another product is Velcro. This hook-and-loop fastener was invented after a Swiss engineer observed how the seeds of a plant clung to his clothing. He then made two fabrics sk together thanks to the hooks on one surface and the loops on the other. Since then, Velcro has gradually become a familiar fastener for shoes, jackets, and even spacesuits.

It is definitely true that nature has inspired numerous inventions and technologies. Scientists and inventors have tried to imitate something in nature in an effort to create better, stronger, safer tools and devices for our everyday life.

The more people travel, the bigger impact they may have on the environment. How can we reduce it while travelling? Here are some advice.

Reduce your carbon footprint while travelling. Since flying produces more carbon footprint than any other means of transport, you should only fly when the trip is long. During the trip, you should walk, cycle or use public transport as much as you can. This not only helps to keep the environment clean, but also allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature and interact with local people.

Choose eco-friendly activities that benefit animals and the ecosystem. Avoid activities that allow you to touch or ride animals because they disturb their natural patterns and attract many people. Instead, visit wildlife parks or organic farms. These will help you understand and respect the nature more and stop doing things that harm the environment.

Researchers in the field of psychology have found that one of the best way to make an important decision, such as choosing a university to attend or business to invest in, involves the utilization of a decision worksheet. Psychologists who study optimization compare the actual decisions made by people to theretical ideal decisions to see how similar they are. Proponents of the worksheet procedure believe that it will yield optimal, that is, the best decisions. Although there are several variations on the exact format that worksheets cam take, they are all similar in their essential aspects.

Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear and concise way and then listing all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the pertinent considerations that all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the pertinent considerations that will be affected by each decision are listed, and the relative importance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each consideration is assigned a numerical value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathematically calculated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest number of points emerges as the best decision.

Since most important problems are multifaceted, there are several alternatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decision-making procedure is that it permits people to deal with more variables than their minds can generally comprehend and remember. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once. A worksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variables with complex relationships. A realistic example for many college students is the question "What will I do after graduation?" A graduate might seek a position that offers specialized training, pursue an advanced degree, or travel abroad for a year.

A decision-making worksheet begins with a succinct statement of the problem that will also help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between long-range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short-range ones. Focusing on long-range goals, a graduating student might revise the question above to "What will I do after graduation that will lead to a successful career?"

Question: What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. A comparison of actual decisions and ideal decisions.

B. Research on how people make decisions.

C. A tool to assist in making complex decisions.

D. Differences between long-range and short-range decision making.

Read the text below and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D to each question. Write your answers A, B, C or D on your
answer sheet.
Different Colours can affect us in many different ways; that’s according to Verity Allen. In her new series ‘Colour me
Healthy’, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make. They can
even change our emotions and even influence how healthy we are.
‘Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things?’ says Verity. ‘Our toothpaste
is always white or blue or maybe red. It’s never green. Why not? For some reason we think that blue and white is
clean, while we think of green products as being a bit disgusting. It’s the same for businesses. We respect a
company which writes its name in blue or black, but we don’t respect one that uses pink or orange. People who
design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy.’
During this four-part series, Verity studies eight different colours, two colours in each programme. She meets
people who work in all aspects of the colour industry, from people who design food packets, to people who name
the colours of lipsticks. Some of the people she meets clearly have very little scientific knowledge to support their
ideas, such as the American ‘Colour Doctor’ who believes that serious diseases can be cured by the use of
coloured lights. However, she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on
mice, with some surprising results.
Overall, it’s an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new. But because
Verity is goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series, it is up to the viewers to make their
own decisions about how much they should believe.
1. What is the writer doing in this text?
A. giving information about how colours influence us
B. reporting what happens in a new television series
C. giving information about a television presenter
D. giving his opinion of a recent television show
2. Which of the following shows the probable content of the four shows?
A. Part 1 – Health; Part 2 – Products and Industry; Part 3 – Emotions; Part 4 – Decisions
B. Part 1 – Blue and Black; Part 2 – Red and Orange; Part 3 – White and Grey; Part 4 – Green and Yellow
C. Part 1 – Meeting Designers; Part 2 – Meeting People who Name Colours; Part 3 – Meeting Doctors; Part
4 – Meeting Scientists
D. Part 1 – Cleaning Products; Part 2 – Make-up; Part 3 – Clothes; Part 4 – Food
3. According to Verity, why is a knowledge of colour important?
A. It can help you to choose the best products.
B. It can give you new ideas.
C. It can help you to change people’s minds.
D. It can help you to sell products.
4. Who does the writer respect least?
A. Verity Allen                                       B. The people who name lipsticks
C. The ‘Colour Doctor’                           D. The scientists who work with mice
5. The word “Overall” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to _______.
A. Generally                          B. Partially                              C. Rarely                       D. Readily

Be happy!

There have been lots of surveys about teenagers and happiness and they all come to different conclusions. Some surveys say that most young people are happiest when they spend time with their family. Others say it's when they're with friends. Some teenagers think that getting good marks at school and passing exams make them happy, while others feel that it's having a boyfriend or girlfriend. The problem is that there isn't just one thing that makes everyone happy, and what made you happy last week might not make you happy next week! However, there are some things that can help improve your mood when you are feeling unhappy. Experts believe that exercise can make you a happier person because it releases chemicals in your brain that are related to a feeling of pleasure. There's another surprising idea to help make you happier. Although you might think that eating chocolate is bad for you, it seems, according to some experts, to be good to eat chocolate when you're feeling sad. Of course it isn't healthy to eat too much, but chocolate releases chemicals in the same way that exercise does - and for some people it's easier and quicker than working out in the gym! It's also important to remember that you can’t be happy all the time. You can be happy for brief moments and you should value these times. And when you feel sad, go for a run or eat some chocolate - you'll soon cheer up!
