Are you a positive thinker?

On our website this week, Dr Charles offers some tips on positive thinking.

Are you an optimist? I hope so, because if you are, you’ll live longer and you’ll be healthier. Or are you a pessimist? I hope not. Studies show that you won’t enjoy life as much and you’ll take longer to get better when you’re ill. So how do you think positive, not negative, thoughts? Here are some tips on how to be a positive thinker.

Stop thinking negative thoughts such as ‘I’ll never find a partner’ or ‘I’ll never pass my driving test’. Find something positive to do. Phone your best friend and have a chat. Go out and do some exercise. Put on a funny DVD. This will stop you thinking negative thoughts, and will cheer you up.

Don’t compare your life with other people’s lives. For example, thoughts like ‘She’s got a better job’ or ‘He’s got a bigger house’ make you feel pessimistic about life. Change your thinking to ‘I’ve got a good job and I like my work’ and ‘I’m happy in this house. It’s big enough for me’. Remember, being successful doesn’t always mean you are happy.

Write down your negative thoughts. This will help you to clear those thoughts from your head. And that will make you feel more positive. You could also write down positive things that happened to you. Read them when you are feeling sad or depressed, and that will make you feel more positive.

Use positive language when you speak. This will make you think more positively. For example, don’t say ‘Our holiday was a disaster’. Say ‘Next holiday, we’re going to do things differently’. Don’t say ‘Famous? It’ll never happen’. Say ‘Famous? I’ll try my best’. Try it – it works!

Statements

True / False / Doesn’t say

According to Dr Charles,
1 … if you’re a pessimist, you won’t enjoy life as much.
2 … if you’re a pessimist, you’ll get ill more often.
3 … if you do something positive, you’ll feel better.
4 … if you have negative thoughts, it’s better not to talk to anyone.

5. … if you compare yourself with others, you’ll become like them.
6 … if you have a big house and a good job, this means you’ll always be happy.
7… if you write down your negative thoughts, it will clear your head.

8 … if you write down your positive thoughts, you’ll always be an optimist.
9 … when you read your positive thoughts, you’ll feel more positive.
10 … using positive language doesn’t make any difference to how you feel.

Shopping with mother?

I’m Cathy Huang and I’m 16. Welcome to my blog. This week I’m writing about shopping with your mother. Thanks for reading!

Have you ever been shopping with your mother? I’d like to hear you say ‘Yes, and it was fun.’ But are you really telling the truth? I went to the shopping centre yesterday with my mum. She wanted to buy me a dress for her birthday party. She’s going to be 50 next weekend. So what’s the problem with that? I hear you ask.

Well, the problem is, my mother always wants to buy me what she wants, not what I want. And we want very different things. I tried on a beautiful red dress, but she said it didn’t fit.   (It was very short!) Then I tried on a long skirt, but she didn’t like the colour. (It was purple!) I was in and out of changing rooms all day and we couldn’t agree on anything. She rolled her eyes and complained about everything I tried on. It was so depressing. And so boring. By 5 o’clock my feet were killing me and I still didn’t have a dress for the party.

Next time Mum wants to take me shopping, I’m going to tell her my room is a terrible mess and I have to tidy it now. I know it’s not very nice to lie, but shopping with my mother is not fun. And, I’ve just seen a fantastic dress on eBay. It’s so chic. I’m going to look amazing at Mum’s party.

Good evening. Welcome to our Science for Fun Program. This week, we’ve received a lot of questions asking about life on the moon. We’ve talked to some experts and this is what we’ve found out. There is no water or air on the moon. It is all silent because there is no air. Of course, there will be no music, no
sounds. There are no rivers and no lakes. At night, it is very cold. The temperature goes down 1510C below zero. But during the day the temperature rises to 1000C above zero.
There are great round holes on the moon. They look like big lakes. They are called craters. There are more than 30,000 craters on the moon. There are also high mountains. The highest mountains on the moon are about 26,000 feet or 8,000 meters high.
And here is something very interesting to know: on the moon you weigh one sixth of what you weigh on earth. If you weigh 50 kilos, on the moon you will weigh only a little more than 8 kilos. You will be able to jump very high, even higher than an Olympic Champion. You can take very long steps as well. And …
may be you want won’t sleep very well because one day on the moon lasts for 2 weeks.
So, is there life on the moon? I’ll leave the question for you to answer yourself.
……01. There is no air on the moon.
……02. There are rivers and lakes on the moon.
……03. There are no sounds on the moon.
……04. It is very cold at night on the moon.

CouchSurfing – a different kind of travel experience
by Emma Jackson

I love travelling abroad, but two years ago I didn’t have much cash to spend on my holiday. At first, I was planning to go camping again, but then a friend suggested an alternative: CouchSurfing. I had no idea what that was, so she explained. ‘CouchSurfers’ are people who stay as guests in other people’s homes for free, and visit the sights in the local area. You can do the things that most tourists do, like sunbathing on the beach or sightseeing in the town centre. Or your host could give you a language lesson, teach you how to cook local delicacies, or take you to places that visitors never find. It sounded much more fun than my other holidays, so I joined the website and sent emails to about twenty hosts in France and Spain right away.

A few days later, I already had ten replies. After a week or two of emails, I made arrangements with four hosts in three different cities. I’m quite talkative and they seemed very friendly, so I wasn’t concerned about spending time with strangers. Two weeks later, I was arriving in Paris, and meeting my first host, Claudette.

Over the next ten days, I stayed in four very different homes, improved my foreign languages, and made some great new friends. Sometimes the places where I stayed were basic –a sofa to sleep on, or even just a floor, but sometimes they were luxurious – much nicer than the hostels that I usually go to. I think it was probably the cheapest and most interesting holiday I’ve ever had!

I’ve done CouchSurfing again twice since then: in Italy, and here in the UK. I’ll definitely do it again. In fact, I’m going on a trip to South America next year. And I’ve had five visitors at my place, including Claudette. I’ve discovered that hosting is as much fun as exploring a new place. CouchSurfing is a fantastic experience. Try it some time!

Read the text, then decide if the statements are true or false Cutting down on waste Hello everyone! My name is Jennie. Today I want to talk about a very important topic and that is cutting down on waste. Here are some simple tips and simple actions that you can add or incorporate into your lifestyle to help look after our planet. Before I talk a little bit about some actions that you can take into changing your lifestyle to help the environment and to help cut down on waste, I just want to jog your memory about the three Rs, which are always important to remember and that is ‘Reduce’, ‘Reuse’ and ‘Recycle’. Reducing waste actually helps to prevent waste being produced in the first place, and it’s probably one of the best ways to start off with because if you don’t have waste in the first place, then we don’t have the problem of disposing of it. An example of how you can do this is perhaps by choosing loose fruit and vegetables at the supermarket rather than the ones which are packaged in plastic. Also, using a reusable plastic or metal bottle and reusable plastic containers are a great way to reduce the amount of plastic you accumulate. In my family, we use a lot of ice cream tubs. We use them to keep our leftover food and it works perfectly fine. The second R is to reuse items. Instead of throwing things straight into the rubbish bin, why don’t you see if you can reuse them again? I like to do this a lot with gift bags, which I get when I receive presents for special occasions. I usually keep the gift bags or the boxes and reuse them when I’m giving a gift to someone else. You can also do the same thing with plastic bags. Instead of getting a new bag every time you go food shopping, just bring your old ones along, and that way you’re cutting down on the amount of plastic that you accumulate. And finally, recycle. Recycling turns waste products into a new item, or, as I like to say, it gives them a second life. I’ve recently been clearing out my wardrobe and throwing away some clothes that I no longer like or perhaps don’t fit me any more – and the money from selling them goes towards helping a charity, so it’s a win-win for all. 27. The meaning of the Three R's: Reduce, Repair and Report A. True B. False 28. We should choose loose fruit and vegetables instead of the plastic-wrapped or packaged ones. A. True B. False 29. Jennie uses ice cream tubs to keep leftovers. A. True B. False 30. Every time Jennie receives a present, she always throws the gift bag straight into the rubbish bin. A. True B. False 31. According to Jennie, we cannot reuse plastic bags. A. True B. False 32. Recycling turns new products into waste. A. True B. False

II.  Read the text, then decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F).

These are some easy habits that help you stay healthy and live longer.

      Go for a jog

Exercise is key to good health. Aerobic activity, like running, is crucial for getting your blood pumping and your heart working. A recent study showed that people who run have 25 to 40 per cent reduced risk of early death, and live about three years longer.

Get more sun - but not too much

The “sunshine vitamin” – vitamin D, that is – has been shown to fight to disease, improve bone health, and prevent depression. Concerns over skin cancer are well-founded, and sunblock is generally a good idea. But getting 15 to 30 minutes of sun exposure a day should be adequate for vitamin D production.

      Stress less

The impact of stress on our overall health is huge, so reducing stress is one way to lower our risk of many deadly diseases.

      Eat more fruits and veggies

If you want to live longer, eat more fruits and vegetables. The vitamins, minerals, and most importantly, the fibre help control satiety so you do not need to eat much of the animal foods. High fibre diets promote lower cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancers such as colon cancer.

1.   One of the most important things you can do to stay healthy is to exercise.

2.   Vitamin D comes from the sun.

3.   Getting too much sun can be harmful.

4.   Stress doesn’t impact on your health.

can’t turn it off.
Being online for many hours at a time does not mean you have a problem. The Internet
is very useful. Online, you can pay your bills, buy clothes, and read the news. There are
many good reasons to spend time online. However, people with an Internet addiction are
online too much. They don’t spend time with their friends and family. Instead, they spend
their time chatting with their Internet friends, people they have never met in real life.
Some also play online games all day or night. Some people with Internet addictions even
leave their jobs so they can spend even more time online! People with Internet addictions
don’t just go online to shop, have fun, or do work. People who have this problem often go
online because they want to escape the stress and problems in their lives. Many internet
addicts stop caring about their real lives, and focus only on their online lives.
One way Internet addicts can get help is by using special software. This software
controls how much time someone can spend online. It tells the computer to turn off the
internet after a certain amount time. This helps people focus on real life. The software’s
goal is to teach people to use the Internet for good reasons and not just as an escape.
1. People with Internet addiction spend most of their free time on the Internet.
2. Paying bills online is a useful way to use the Internet.
3. Internet addiction causes problems in one’s daily life.
4. Most Internet addicts play online games all day or night.
5. Using special software is a way of helping people stop their Internet addiction.
6. What is the main idea of the article?
A. People should not spend time on the Internet. B. The Internet is very good for

C. Spending too much time online is not good. D. Families should use the Internet
together.
7. Which is NOT a problem for people with Internet addiction?
A. They stop spending time with their family. B. They learn to type very fast.
C. They might lose their jobs. D. They stop caring about their real
lives.
8. According to the passage, a person is most likely to become an Internet addict if.

‘I’m taking photographs, of course!’ She explains, ‘I’m not taking photographs for Vogue or anyone else. It’s like a holiday. In my business, it’s easy to forget there’s another world out there. And I like looking at clothes in a different way when I travel.’
But in this world of global fashion, people all over the world wear the same clothes. The businessman’s suit in Beijing is like the businessman’s suit in Berlin. And jeans and T-shirts are almost a type of uniform these days.
‘Yes, I think that’s true in the big international cities,’ Gillian says. ‘But I’m visiting regions in the world with their own traditional clothes and their own fashions. That’s especially true in this part of Africa.’
