CAN YOU ADVISE ME?

I am writing to you becasue I would like become a hournalist when I leave school. Since you are the editor ò the local newspaper, I hope that you many be able to give me some advice about what I should to do. I have written some articles during my spare time and I am enclosing two of them. I hope that you won't mind looking at them and telling me whether you think they are good or not. I would appreciate any comments you make because I am keen to learn. I also wonder if you could advise me about a few other matters. Do you think it is the better to do a course in journalism at a college ỏ to try to get a job as a junior reporter as soon as I finish school? Do newpapers prefer to employ people with a qualification in hournalism or to train them while they are actually doing the jobs? Another question I would like to ask is, would you advise me to specialise in one kind of report, such as politics, or it is advisable to know a little bit about a lot of subjects? I am sure that you are very busy but I would be grateful for any advise you could give me. Finally, would it be possible to come into the newpaper offices one day so that I could see how a real newpaper operate? I would welcome the opportunity to do that.

I've just been to see a film called Touching the Void. It's about two climbers who decided to go climbing in the mountains in Peru. It took them two days to reach the mountain they had been decided to climb because it was in such a remote place. They left a companion and the most of their supplies at a base camp, optimisstically thinking about they would be back in a couple of days. After a difficult climb, they reached at the top of the mountain. It was then that everything started to go wrong. Because of one climber had broken his leg, he had to be lowered down the mountain by means of a rope. His leg it was so much painful that he couldn't stand on it. After a very exciting bit of the film, which I won't describe, he found by himself alone at the bottom of a crevasse. He managed to climb out and eventually crawl to safety. The cold was so intense that he got frostbite in his hands, but he was carried on, dragging himself down a glacer and accross rocks. When he arrived at the base camp, his friends were too amazed to see him. They couldn't believe that in despite his broken leg, he had managed to reach the camp.

Mountaineers have noted that as they climb, for example, up to the 12,633–foot Humphreys Peak in the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, plant life changes radically. Starting among the cacti of the Sonoran Desert, one climbs into a pine forest at 7,000 feet and a treeless alpine tundra at the summit. It may seem that plants at a given altitude are associated in what can be called “communities” – groupings of interacting species. The idea is that over time, plants that require particular climate and soil conditions come to live in the same places, and hence are frequently to be found together. Scientists who study the history of plant life are known as paleobotanists, or paleobots for short. They build up a picture of how groups of plants have responded to climate changes and how ecosystems develop. But are these associations, which are real in the present, permanent?

A great natural experiment took place on this planet between 25,000 and 10,000 years ago, when small changes in the earth’s orbit and axis of rotation caused great sheets of ice to spread from the poles. These glaciers covered much of North America and Europe to depths of up to two miles, and then, as the climate warmed, they retreated. During this retreat, they left behind newly uncovered land for living things to colonize, and as those living things moved in they laid down a record we can read now. As the ice retreated and plants started to grow near a lake, they would release pollen. Some would fall into the lake, sink to the bottom, and be incorporated into the sediment. By drilling into the lake bottom it is possible to read the record of successive plant life around the lake. The fossil record seems clear; there is little or no evidence that entire groups of plants moved north together. Things that lived together in the past don’t live together now, and things that live together now didn’t live together in the past. Each individual organism moved at its own pace. The fossil record seems to be telling us that we should be thinking about preserving species by giving them room to maneuver – to respond to environmental changes.

The passage states that by drilling into the lake bottom it is possible to find successive fossils of _______.

A. plant life

B. sediment

D. ice

D. pollen

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 38 to 45.

Halloween falls on October 31 each year in North America and other part of the world. What do you know about Halloween? Do you celebrate it in your country? Here is a little history about it?

Like other holidays, Halloween has evolved and changed throughout history. Over 2,000 years ago people called the Celts lived in what is now Ireland, the UK, and parts of Northern France. November 1 was their New Year's Day. They believed that the night before the New Year (October 31) was a time when the living and the dead came together.

More than a thousand years ago the Christian church named November 1 All Saints Day (also called All Hallows). This was a special holy day to honor the saints and other people who died for their religion. The night before All Hallows was called Hallows Eve. Later the name was changed to Halloween.

Like the Celts, the Europeans of that time also believed that the spirits of the dead would visit the earth on Halloween. They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So on that night people wore costumes that looked like ghosts or other evil creatures. They thought if they dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not harm them.

The tradition of Halloween was carried to America by the immigrating Europeans. Some of the traditions changed a little, though. For example, on Halloween in Europe some people would carry lanterns made from turnips. In America, pumpkins were more common. So people began putting candles inside them and using them as lanterns. That is why you see Jack 'o lanterns today.

These days Halloween is not usually considered a religious holiday. It primarily a fun for children. Children dress up in costumes like people did a thousand years ago. But instead of worrying about evil spirits, they go from house to house. They knock on door and say "trick or treat". The owner of each house give candy or something special to each trick and treat.

According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The Celts created All Hallows

B. The name Halloween originated from the word Hallows Eve.

C. Halloween falls on October 31 each year.

D. Halloween is a special holy day to honor the saints and people who died for their religion.
