This is a complicated problem. We burn fuel, and this causes air pollution. We throw away plastic bags, containing toys and other objects. These stay in the environment, they are not like paper or wood that slowly disappear. We made thousands of new chemicals. Factories that make or use chemicals always have chemical wastes. These are often poisonous, and they also stay in the environment.

Air pollution is by far the most harmful form of pollution in our environment. Air pollution is caused by the exhaust fume emitted by cars, buses and trucks, trains, and factories. Even smoke from burning leaves and cigarettes is harmful to the environment and causes a lot of damage to man and the atmosphere. Evidence of increasing air pollution is seen in lung cancer, asthma, allergies, and various breathing problems. Even the birds have been affected, with severe air pollution preventing from reaching their seasonal metropolitan destinations of centuries

B. Thomas Edison was one of the greatest inventors of the world. He was responsible for more than one thousand inventions including the electric light bulb and the record player. He also created the world's first industrial research laboratory.

Edison was born in 1847 in Ohio, USA. When he was 10 years old, he set up asmall baloratory after he had read a science book his mother showed him. In 1869, he borrowed some money and began to make inventions. In 1876 he built a new laboratory so that he could spend all his time inventing. He planned to turn out minor inventions every ten days and "big trick" every six months. He developed many devices that brought great benefits to people's life. He once said that the value of an idea lay in the using of it. Edison died in 1931, after having aremarkably productive life.

a. Environmental problems: What are they?

b. Environmental protection: How important is it?

c. Environmental solutions: How practical are they?

The environment we live in is facing many serious problems. We need to be aware of these problems so that we can find ways to protect nature.

A. Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere. It is one of the biggest issues facing humans today. It can have serious consequences such as rising sea levels, polar ice melting, and extreme weather events like floods or heatwaves.

B. Another environmental problem is the cutting and clearing of natural forests. The loss of forests can have a negative impact on the environment. It can damage the natural habitats of many animals and put wildlife in danger. It can also destroy the natural soil and lead to climate change.

C. Air pollution is also a serious problem. It is mainly caused by waste gases that come out of vehicles, machines, or factories. When these harmful gases combine with the water in the air, they come down as rain or snow, which can damage all forms of life. In addition, this problem leads to global warming and climate change. It is also a major cause of respiratory diseases or even lung cancer.

D. Around the world, the number of endangered animals is rising. Many of them disappear because of pollution and climate change. In addition, humans illegally hunt and kill animals, and catch too many fish at once. This is upsetting the natural balance of ecosystems, which can be harmful to all living and non-living things.

Tạm dịch:

Today I’d like to begin a discussion on the problem of the heating up the earth. First, we’ll touch on the relationship between fluorocarbons and the ozone layer. You probably remember that the ozone layer is the protective shield around the earth. It is important to all life, because it filters out harmful ultraviolet light from the sun. Ozone itself, a form of oxygen, is regularly made by the action of the sun in the upper atmosphere. It is also regularly destroyed by natural chemical processes.

The problem now is that too much of the ozone layer is being destroyed. Scientists suspect that certain chemicals, such as fluorocarbons, are contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer. And how do we use fluorocarbons? The most common uses are in spray cans and cooling systems. The chemical pollution from these fluorocarbons can account for some of the ozone losses that have been reported. There are, however, new studies linking the sun itself to the depletion of the ozone layer. We’ll go into that new study more next time.

What is the ozone layer made of?

A. Oxygen

B. Shields

C. Ultraviolet light

D. Fluorocarbons

When we talk of the environment today, many people still think only of tree planting and keeping THE (1) surroundings clean. Although both activities are RIGHT (2), they are only a small part of the environmental story. The environment is both urban and rural. It INCLUDES (3) seashore, rivers, mountains and so on. It includes cities, towns, ETC. (4). The water we drink and the air we breathe are important elements of the environment, so ARE (5) the trees, plants and animals. So the environment is the sum total of the country's NATURAL (6) resources. The environment PROVIDES (7) us with all our daily needs. This is true for BOTH (8) the urban and rural people. Rural people rely directly ON (9) the natural environment for many of OUR(10) daily needs.
