Fossil fuels take millions of years to make. But they are not unlimited. We are using up the fuels that were made more than 300 million years ago. They are not renewable like solar power, wind power, hydro power or biomass. Once they are gone they are gone. So, it’s best not to waste fossil fuels.

We can save fossil fuels by conserving energy. One simple way to do this is to turn off appliances, TVs and radios that we are not using. We can also turn off lights when no one is in the room. Another way is to go by bike or walk instead of driving cars or motorbikes.

   A. Write true or false for the statements:

   1. Three major forms of fossil fuels are oil, coal and natural gas.                  ……………………..

   2. They were formed right after the time of dinosaurs.                                     ……………………..

   B. Answer the questions:

    1. How can we save fossil fuels?

    2. How long does it take to make fossil fuels?

The sun’s energy is stored in coal, natural gas, water and wind. Coal, oil and natural gas are known as fossil fuels. Fossil fuels were formed over millions of years when the remains and fossils of prehistoric plants and animals sank to the bottom of swamps and oceans.

We use the energy in these fossils fuels to make electricity. We use electricity in many different  ways. We light and heat our homes, schools and businesses using electricity, and to run computers, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners. Our cars and planes run on gasoline, which comes from oil. As of the year 2013, most of the energy we use comes from fossil fuels.

There are three major forms of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. All three were formed many hundreds of millions of years ago before the time of the dinosaurs – therefore we call them fossil fuels.

1. Three major forms of fossil fuels are oil, coal and natural gas.

2. They were formed right after the time of dinosaurs.

3. Once fossil fuels are gone, they will come back later.

We use many different energy sources to do work for us. Energy sources are classified into two groups - renewable and nonrenewable. Non-renewable energy sources are those that take millions of years to form and will run out some day. It is energy that comes from fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas. Fossil fuels are mainly made up of carbon and were formed millions of years ago. The chemical reaction which takes place when we burn fossil fuels releases carbon compounds such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide is one of the green house gases which is contributing to global warming and air pollution. On the other hand, renewable energy sources will never run out, are better for the environment and do not cause pollution. Renewable energy is often called green energy because it is a natural energy, always available and does not have to be formed like nonrenewable energy. The green energy is always there. For example, the Sun consistently shines, water is abundant, and the winds blow throughout the year. The five types include solar, energy from the Sun; geothermal, energy from heat within the Earth; hydroelectric, energy from moving water; biomass, energy from dead plants and microorganisms and finally, energy from the wind.
