IV. a. Read the article and write headings a-d in gaps 1-4.

A. The reasons we love soaps.                                                           B. The origin of soaps.

C. Popular soaps made in Spanish.                           D. Popular soaps made in English.

Soap operas are one of the most popular types of television programme in the world. Charlie Price investigates the world of:

22. .................. In the United States, drama series started on the radio in the 1930s. The main audience was women, so many of the advertisements on the programmes were for soap. And at the time, western films were called ‘Horse Operas’. Soon, people started calling the drama series ‘Soap Operas’.

23. .................. In the USA and the UK, soap operas can be on the radio or television for years. In the UK, The Archers is about people in a small village in England. The programme started over 55 years ago and it's still on the radio three times a week. Over four million people listen to each episode. TheBold and the Beautiful is a US television soap opera. It began in 1987 and is on television in almost 100 countries all over the world with an audience of over 300 million people!

24. .................. In Latin America, TV soap operas are called telenovelos. A typical telenovela is on television five or six days a week for about three months. People watch Latin American telenovelas all over the world - even in countries like China, Poland and Russia. And the stars are often more famous than film stars. When the Mexican telenovela actress and singer Thalia, star of Maria Io del Borrio (Mona from the Neighbourhood) went to the Philippines, the President met her at the airport!

25. .................. A recent survey asked 300 people why they watched soaps. The most common answers were "They're relaxing", "They’re part of my routine", "I like the characters”. People also said that they had to find out what was happening in their favourite soap. When the Venezuelan telenovela, Kossandra was on television in Indonesia, the government became worried because some people were taking days off work to watch the programme!

U Minh Thuong National Park is located in An Bien, An Minh, and Vinh Thuan districts of Kien Giang Province, about 60 km south of Rach Gia city centre. This place is considered one of the most important sites for ecosystem conservation in the Mekong River Delta. It attracts tourists not only with its wild and beautiful scenery, but also with its rare and rich biodiversity.

B. ____________________

U Minh Thuong National Park covers a large area of freshwater wetlands, including mangrove forests. Its central part is surrounded by waterways with a series of gates, which are used to manage the water level.

C. ____________________

Home to 226 species of plants, U Minh Thuong National Park is the region with the richest biodiversity in the Mekong River Delta. It used to be one of the largest habitats for water birds in the area, but their home was badly damaged by forest fires in 2002. Now there are about two hundred types of birds in the park, including some unique birds like the great spotted eagle. Thirty-two types of mammals have been found here. Ten of them, including the fishing cat and Sunda pangolin, are on the list of rare and endangered species, native to Viet Nam.

D. ____________________

The ideal time to explore U Minh Thuong National Park is from August to November, known as the floating water season of the region. Tourists can take a boat to experience nature and wildlife. Visitors can go to Trang Doi, a place where thousands of bats gather, hanging on the trees like huge fruits. Another popular place to visit is Trang Chim, a large area with thousands of colourful birds. So if you love nature, you should definitely go to explore this amazing natural park.

Follow your nose...

Meet three people whose sense of smell has made a difference to their lives.

A. Helen Keller - a famous activist - was deaf and blind herself. With an extraordinary sense of smell, she could identify people's jobs by the odour on their clothes. ‘When a person passes’, she said, 'I get a scent impression of where he has been’. For her, a smell can remind us of another time and place.

B. James Bell has worked for a perfume company for over twenty years. He says, 'To develop a superior sense of smell, you must train it, like a concert pianist’. After passing a 'smell test', James studied perfumery in France, where he learned to recognise about 2,800 synthetic and 140 natural materials. Since then he has helped to create the world's favourite fragrances.

C. Journalist Lucy Mangan has been anosmic since birth. So she can't smell anything, even the fragrances of roses. She has never tried different perfumes in a shop. As 75-95% of the food flavour comes from its smell, meals haven't had much flavour. Although she can feel the different textures of lasagne, steak or fish, they're all quite tasteless.

Recently fans of top soaps, dramas and reality shows in the USA have started to get angry about the number and frequency of the adverts in the middle of the programmes. Sometimes it seems that the adverts are more important than the programmes themselves. For example, American dramas aren’t as long as they
were in the past. Nowadays in the US, an “hour- long” drama lasts about 40 minutes, whereas in the 1980s the programmes lasted 48 minutes. The rest is adverts.
The ABC channel had slightly more adverts than other channels. But recently they’ve changed, which is even worse than before! Before, all their dramas had four sections. But now its producers separate each programmes into six sections. Usually the first section is approximately ten minutes long. Then they have the first break. When people have watched a programme for ten minutes, it’s much less probable that they will stop watching or change channels. But then, in the next 45 minutes, there are four more commercial breaks. Each break is about three and a half minutes long.
All of this makes it much more difficult for dramas’ writers to write good stories. Quiet scenes make no impact because there are more and more adverts which are longer and longer. “It’s OK for game shows or more exciting adventure series” says American TV producer David Kelly. “But for programmes that don’t depend on violence or melodramatic scenes, it’s more difficult to make a story with six sections. The only thing you can do is be more aggressive, either with the music or the visual impact, just to attract people’s attention after the adverts”.

Question 31: Which could be the best title of the passage?
A. Adverts turn TV viewers off.
B. Commercial breaks increase productivity.
C. TV commercials are no longer in favour.
D. Modern advertising is an advantage.
Question 32: The phrase “the programmes” in paragraph 1 refers to ________.

Question 33: The word “probable” in paragraph 2 mostly means ______.
A. causing worry                          B. unable to believe
C. very difficult to deal with          D. likely to happen
Question 34: According to the passage, previously all of the ABC channel’s dramas________.
A. lasted 40 minutes          B. consisted of 4 parts
C. had six segments          D. were divided into 5 separate parts
Question 35: Which of the following is TRUE about game shows as stated in the passage?
A. Quiet scenes in game shows are important factors in attracting people’s attention.
B. It is possible to make them as six-part programmes.
C. They rely neither on violence nor melodramatic scenes.
D. They attract TV viewers by adverts lasting for three minutes.

A. __________________________

As the oldest national park in Viet Nam, Cuc Phuong is a natural habitat of many rare animals and plants in Asia. It is estimated that over 2,000 plant species and thousands of species of animals live in the 22,000-hectare ecosystem. The park also has the largest variety of birds in northern Viet Nam with more than 3,000 bird species.

B. __________________________

The rich ecosystem of Cuc Phuong attracts many nature lovers from all over the world. The park is very popular from April to May, when visitors have a chance to see more than 400 species of colourful butterflies in the forest. That’s why it has won the award of Asia’s Leading National Park several times.

C. __________________________

Despite the government's effort to protect Cuc Phuong, several problems have been reported. Small parts of the park have been destroyed as people have cut down old trees without permission. In addition, rare animals were hunted illegally, some of which were fortunately rescued and returned to the forest. There are still irresponsible tourists who drop litter on the trails, which pollutes the water and soil. These actions can damage the ecosystem of the park. Therefore, tougher measures should be taken to protect the biodiversity of the area.

Write one word in each gap.

24th June

We had our English exam today. It was a disaster! We all sat there nervously, waiting for Mrs Jennings to say we could start. Finally, she told us to turn our exam papers..................... Then she read.........................the instructions to make sure we all understood. We had to write three essays in two hours! We weren't allowed to look.........................any words in the dictionary, and we had to write in pen. That meant we couldn't rub anything.....................if we made a mistake. We had to cross it...........................neatly or just rip........................the whole piece of paper and start again. So, I read through the three question very carefully and thought about what I was going to write. I'd just written my name..................at the top of the first piece of paper, and was about to start writing the first essay, when Mrs Jennings pointed........................that there were only five minutes left. Oh dear!
