Tet - shortened form of Tet Nguyen Dan ( Vietnamese Lunar New Year or Tet Holiday) is one of the most important and biggest festivals in Vietnam. Following the Vietnamese lunar calendar, this special holiday - Tet starts at the beginning of a new year. On the Gregorian calendar, this holiday usually has the date falling between January 21st and February 19th

People find it easy to have some mistaken views that the Vietnamese are celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, perhaps because of its similarity since both China and Vietnam use the lunar calendar. However, the Vietnamese have many different traditions and customs from China. Another scholar Le Quy Don also wrote in "Kien Van Tieu Luc" which is a journal that includes miscellaneous stories of Vietnam about history, tradition, culture, geography, procedures, and people from 1762 to 1hat during the Ly dynasty, a great variety of different important rituals (e.g., setting up "Dan Phong Van" to pray for the rains, building "Dan Xa Tac - communal houses" to crave for a year of abundant harvests) were made while during Hong Duc period (1442 - 1497), Tet Nguyen Dan is the most important holiday of the year and all the mandarins had to gather to celebrate it with royal families.

Lunar New Year festival, also known as Tet, is the biggest traditional festival in my country, Viet Nam. Tet is usually from the end of January to early February. Before Tet, Vietnamese people prepare many things, we always want everything to be perfect for the new year. In particularly, we clean the house and decorate it with flowers and trees such as kumquat tree, peach blossom,… In addition, a huge amount of food will be bought before Tet for making traditional dishes like Banh Chung, Banh Tet, Gio cha,… During Tet, we visit our relatives and give them wishes. Traditionally, elders will give lucky money to children and the oldest people in the family. However, nowadays, we can give it to anyone including friends, parents, neighbors. Besides, Vietnamese usually go to pagodas or temples to pray for health, wealth, success. All in all, Tet is all about going back to origins, being good to others, enjoying the precious moment, and wishing for the best to come.

Indian Festival

The Milwaukee Native American Indian Festival is truly and amazing event. For three days in September every year, thousands gather in Milwaukee, USA, to celebrate Indian culture. Last year, I was lucky enough to attend the festival and experience it for myself.

The preparations take months. Dance teams from all over the country practise to compete in the tribal Pow Wow dance contest. Indian craftsmen work to produce the many traditional items on display. Then, in the week before the festival, the stalls are put up and the food is prepared, so that everything will be ready for the big day.

The celebrations began at 4pm and there was plenty to see and do. I visited a traditional Indian village, watched skilled craftsmen carve totem poles, and even learned how to do tribal Indian dancing. It was also a great opportunity to sample some traditional native dishes, corn bread and buffalo burgers.

The festival was fun, entertaining and educational. It was a wonderful way to learn about Native American culture and celebrate the end of summer.

Tet is a national and family festival. It is an occasion for every Vietnamese to have a good time while thinking about the last year and the next year. At Tet, spring fairs are organized, streets and public buildings are brightly decorated and almost all shops are crowded with people shopping for Tet. At home, every is tidied, special food is cooked, offerings of food, fresh water, flowers and betel are made on the family altar with burning joss- sks scenting the air. First-footing is made when the lucky visitor comes and children are given lucky money wrapped in a red tiny envelope. Tet is also a time for peace and love. During Tet, children often behave well and friends, relatives and neighbors give each other best wishes for the new year
