Light pollution is a side effect of industrial civilization. Its sources include building exterior and interior lighting, advertising, commercial properties, offices, factories, streetlights, and illuminates sporting venues.

The fact is that much outdoor lighting used at night is inefficient, overly bright and, in many cases, completely unnecessary. This light, and the electricity used to create it, is being wasted by spilling into the sky, rather than focusing on the actual objects and areas that people want illuminated. For three billion years, life on Earth in a rhythm of light and dark that was created solely by the illumination of the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Now, artificial lights overpower the darkness and our cities glow at night. It disrupts the natural day-night pattern and shifts the delicate balance of our environment. Light pollution has negative impacts. It increases energy consumption, disrupts the ecosystem and wildlife and harms human health. Fortunately, concern about light pollution is rising dramatically. A growing number of sciences, homeowners, environmental groups and civic leaders are taking actions to restore the natural night.

SOLAR ENERGY

Sunlight carries huge amounts of energy. You can feel the Sun’s energy when sunlight warms your skin on a summer day. To capture the Sun’s energy, scientists have developed solar cells, called photovoltaic cells. These cells convert sunlight into electricity. When sunlight hits a solar cell, some of the light energy is absorbed. This light energy causes the particles in the solar cell to move faster, and the movement of these particles creates electricity.

In some places, large panels of solar cells harvest sunshine to make electricity for homes and businesses. Solar cells have been placed on cars and appliances, too. Since the Sun sends abundant free energy streaming toward Earth 24 hours a day, people in many parts of the world, not just the sunniest places, have fixed solar cells and solar panels on the roofs of their houses or businesses to lower their energy costs. Experts say that the huge installation of solar panels in sunny regions could generate enough electricity to supply an entire country. Capturing this energy can help overcome our diminishing energy supply. New ways to capture this energy are being developed an the time to maximize efficiency.

1. What is the source of solar energy?

a. sunlight b. photovoltaic cells c. solar panels d. electricity

2. Solar cells are used __________

a. to collect energy from the sun b. to provide sunlight to houses

c. to convert sunlight into electricity d. both a and c are correct

3. Which of the following statements is true?

a. Solar cells absorb all of the light energy from the sun.

b. The light energy causes the particles to move faster to make electricity.

c. Solar energy can be used to power homes and businesses only.

d. Large solar panels have been placed on cars and appliances.

4. As used in line 9, ‘abundant’ most nearly means .

a. Unlimited b. dangerous c. plentiful d. clean

5. Where have people fixed solar panels?

a. In the sunniest places b. Anywhere outside their houses

c. Inside their houses d. On the roofs of their houses

6. As used in line 14, ‘diminishing’ most nearly means .

a. Decreasing b. increasing c. unending d. restoring

7. According to the passage, all of the following statements are true EXCEPT

a. the Sun produces a large amount of energy.

b. solar energy could provide enough electricity for the whole world

c. scientists are constantly developing new ways to capture the Sun’s energy

d. people use solar energy to reduce their energy costs.

Read the passage below and decide whether the statements are TRUE or FALSE?

Light pollution is the excessive, misdirected or invasive use of artificial outdoor lighting. Mismanaged lighting affects the environment, energy resources, wildlife, humans and astronomy research.

Light pollution is not a new phenomenon. Over the last 50 years, as countries became affluent and urbanized, demand for outdoor lighting increased and light pollution sprawled beyond the city limits and into suburban and rural areas. This form pollution is now prevalent in Asia, Europe, and North America, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. In 2008, National Geographic magazine named Chicago the most light-polluted city in the United States.

However, the most light-polluted spot in the world is Hong Kong, China. In March 2013, the University of Hong Kong named the city the most light polluted in the world. A study by the university found the night sky in Tsim Sha Tsui, an urban neighborhood in southern Kowloon, Hong Kong, to be 1,200 times brighter than a normal urban city sky. Luminous pollution of this magnitude is on the rise worldwide. In a 2010 article from the Ecology and Society Journal, Hölker and others stated the use of artificial lighting increases by 20% each year, depending on the region, and noted there is an urgent need for light pollution policies that surpass energy efficiency to include humans, animals and the environment.

Question: Light pollution is the excessive, misdirected or invasive use of artificial outdoor lighting.
