The Bear and the Two Travelers

Two Friends ⁽⁴¹⁾__________ (travel) together, when a Bear suddenly appeared before them. One of them, ⁽⁴²⁾__________ (think) of his own safety climbed up quickly into a tree, without trying ⁽⁴³⁾__________ (help) his friend do the same. The other, ⁽⁴⁴⁾__________ (not have) time to hide, ⁽⁴⁵⁾__________ (fall) flat on the ground, without moving at all, as if he were dead. The Bear came up and ⁽⁴⁶⁾__________ (smell) him all over, and after a while, thinking he was dead, ⁽⁴⁷⁾__________ (walk) away. When the danger was gone, the other Traveler climbed down from the tree, and, laughing at his friend ⁽⁴⁸⁾__________ (ask) him:
“What did the bear whisper in your ear?”
