Canada would remind Norman Bethune, a great Canadian physician doctor, who devoted himself to China during World War II. And now, besides Dr. Bethune, whenever mention of this country with beautiful maples, my Canadian pen pal will come to my mind. I met him in an English-learning forum. I often posted a lot of questions there, and he always voluntarily helped me out. And gradually, we got familiar and became friends. For a while, I was rather depressed. He always encouraged me to cheer up. Now, I still remember well I got an e-card from him. I lighted up after watching that. He often said, “Keep smiling” at the end of his letter to me. He was very tolerant, and I hardly saw he crossed swords against any other forum members there but one time. A woman put up a post, saying, “She would not agree her daughter to marry a black man.” He responded with Martin Luther King’s quote “We must judge people by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin!”. This comment of his branded on my mind then at once. Oh, the cool friend of Canada!

Read the following passage. Decide if the statements from 17 to 20 are True or False and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) for the questions 21 and 22.             (1.5pts)

Protecting yourself and others from the spread of COVID 19

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID 19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol- based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Why? Washing your hands with soap and water  or using alcohol- based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and others. Why? When someone coughs. sneezes, or speaks they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person has the disease.

Avoid going to crowded places. Why? When people come together in crowds, you are more likely to come into close contact with someone that has COVID-19 and it is more difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre (3 feet)

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you.

You should wear a mask, and know how to dispose of it properly

17. You should clean your hands with an alcohol- based hand rub and then with soap and water.

18. You can maintain 4-feet distance between yourself and others.

19. Never touch eyes, nose and mouth because the virus can enter your body and infect you.

20. Wearing a mask is effective enough to protect you from the virus.

21. The main idea of this passage:

       A. Wearing a mask is compulsory.

       B. Taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

       C. It’s difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre.

       D. Wearing and disposing of a mask properly keep us healthy.

22. “dispose of it properly” means:

       A. wear a mask in a good way.

       B. throw it as quickly as possible.

       C. wash and reuse it many times

       D. wash hands immediately after putting a mask into the dustbin

Long time ago, there was a king in Tibet who loved to eat fish. His love for fish was so great that he could eat almost nothing if there was no fish on the table. It happened one year that there was no rain. Month after month, there was less water in the river, and less and less fish, until there was no fish at all, even for the king. The king could not eat anything. He sent men to all the fishermen’s villages in the country to announce that the man who brought fish to the king’s table could have any reward he asked for. Some time passed and a poor fisherman appeared in front of the king’s palace, carrying a tremendous fish. When the guard at the gate saw the fish, he asked the fisherman to give it to him. Needless to say, the fisherman did not agree and insisted on giving the fish to the king himself. The guard finally agreed to let him go on the condition that the fisherman had to give him half of his reward. After the fisherman met the king, the king asked him what he wanted for the reward. Electric cars are better than petrol cars in several ways. The biggest benefit is reduced pollution. In areas where there is a high percentage of electric cars, there is less pollution. But it is important to understand that electric cars still cause pollution. Remember that the electricity to power electric cars has to come from somewhere, which is most likely a power station. Unless these power stations run on solar or wind energy, they are most likely burning fossil fuels to make electricity. The second benefit of electric cars is a reduction in the dependence on foreign oil. There are several countries, including the United States, that don’t want to rely on oil coming from other countries to power their transportation systems. They want the power to come from within their country, and since electric cars can run on electricity from coal or nuclear power stations, there is less of a need to import oil.

Having a penfriend is an excellent way for students to practice their English. This can either be done the old fashioned way by sending the letter through the post office or by e-mail using the internet. Penfriends are good as the students are communicating with people in real situations.
They feel good when they ask their penfriend a question and then a few days later receive a reply. It also supports their confidence when they see that their American or English penfriend has similar difficulty with spelling and grammar! This page gives ideas of what to write in the first few letters and you will also find links to read real letters from students around the world.
It is always good to end your first letter by saying that you thank them for their time and that you wish them the best even if they do not wish to correspond to you. You should never make your new penpals feel obligated to reply to your letter. They will reply if they want to and do not need to be told that you "look forward to hearing from them soon" or "I will be most disappointed if I do not receive a reply". Comments like this will have no positive effects.
Choose true or false
29. Write for a pen pal is one of the best ways for you to learn English.
30. People feel confident when they contact with ones who have the same problem. 31. Whatever you write, please end your first letter by saying thank
