I live in a mountain village. My parents often tell me stories about their life in the past. It’s not much like the village I can see nowadays.

Some villagers now live in brick houses instead of earthen ones. Our houses are better equipped with electric fans and TVs. Thanks to the TV, we now know more about life outside our village. We don’t use oil lamps any more. We have electric lights which are much brighter. More villagers are using motorcycles for transport instead of riding a horse or walking. We – village children - no longer have to walk a long way and cross a stream to get to school, which is dangerous in the rainy season. Now there’s a new school nearby. We also have more visitors from the city. They come to experience our way of life.

Part 3: Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question. (0,5pt)

These days we hear a lot of nonsense about the ‘great classless society’. The idea that the twentieth century is the age of the common man has become one of the great clichés of our time. The same old arguments are put forward in evidence. Here are some of them: monarchy as a system of government has been completely discredited. The monarchies that survive have been deprived of all political power. Inherited wealth has been savagely reduced by taxation and, in time, the great fortunes will disappear altogether. In a number of countries the victory has been complete. The people rule; the great millennium has become a political reality. But has it? Close examination doesn’t bear out the claim.

It is a fallacy to suppose that all men are equal and that society will be leveled out if you provide everybody with the same educational opportunities. (It is debatable whether you can ever provide everyone with the same educational opportunities, but that is another question.) The fact is that nature dispenses brains and ability with a total disregard for the principle of equality. The old rules of the jungle, ‘survival of the fittest’, and ‘might is right’ are still with us. The spread of education has destroyed the old class system and created a new one. Rewards are based on merit. For ‘aristocracy’ read ‘meritocracy’; in other respects, society remains unaltered: the class system is rigidly maintained.

Genuine ability, animal cunning, skill, the knack of seizing opportunities, all bring material rewards. And what is the first thing people do when they become rich? They use their wealth to secure the best possible opportunities for their children, to give them ‘a good start in life’. For all the lip service we pay to the idea of equality, we do not consider this wrong in the western world. Private schools which offer unfair advantages over state schools are not banned because one of the principles in a democracy is that people should be free to choose how they will educate their children. In this way, the new meritocracy can perpetuate itself to a certain extent: an able child from a wealthy home can succeed far more rapidly than his poorer counterpart. Wealth is also used indiscriminately to further political ends. It would be almost impossible to become the leader of a democracy without massive financial backing. Money is as powerful a weapon as ever it was.

In societies wholly dedicated to the principle of social equality, privileged private education is forbidden. But even here people are rewarded according to their abilities. In fact, so great is the need for skilled workers that the least able may be neglected. Bright children are carefully and expensively trained to become future rulers. In the end, all political ideologies boil down to the same thing: class divisions persist whether you are ruled by a feudal king or an educated peasant.

Part 6: Read the text about dreams. Then decide whether the sentences 1 to 7 are Right or Wrong. If there is not enough information in the text tick the column “doesn’t say”. Tick (ü) the ones that you choose. (0,7pt)

What’s in a dream?

Sometimes, after you wake up, you can’t stop thinking about a dream you had. But most of the time you forget your dreams very quickly or feel like you haven’t had any dreams. But you have. Most 15-year-olds have spent 15 months of their lives dreaming. But they only remember a few of their dreams.

Experts aren’t sure why we dream. But a lot of people think dreams show how we feel about things in our lives. All teens have to deal with similar things, like exam stress and hormones. So they often have similar dreams. For example they are flying over mountains and trees and feel very happy. This means that they are in control of their life and feel powerful. But if they find it difficult to fly, they feel powerless in real life and if there are things that get in their way, like trees or aeroplanes, there could be something that won’t let them do what they want.

Right

Wrong

Doesn’t say

1. 1. Very often we do not remember the dreams we have had at night.

2. 2. Sometimes it is better to forget quickly the dreams we have had.

3. 3. Some dreams can stay in our mind for some time.

4. 4. Experts think that dreaming is a way to deal with our daily problems.

5. 5. 15-year-olds dream more often because of their hormones.

6. 6. All 15-year-olds have the same sort of problems which means they often have the same sort of dreams.

7. 7. If you dream that you are flying this means you are very happy.

How Equal Are Woman, Really?

On the face of it, women in Britain haven’t done too badly over the passed thirty years. There has been a woman Prime Minister a woman has gone into

space, and women are ordained as priests. They have won the right to equal

pay with men for the same work inspite of the fact that they still earn only

80% of their male colleague’s salaries. They have even become professionals

in what have always been considered male sports, like football. But can it

really be said that equality of the sexes is fact rather than wishful thinking. The trouble begins at school, though equality shouldn’t be an issue in education since, acording to the Department of Education’s statistics, they do better than boys in exams at all levels. Nevertheless, they are at an immediate

disadvantage as soon as they apply for jobs and go out to work. Teachers believe its vital to overcome this by encouraging them to study subjects like

physics, which have been almost exclusively a male preserve. A peice of

research recently carried out at Reading University may explain why boys

succeed, weather or not they have better academic qualifications. It shows that they are willing to call out answers in class and risk making mistakes, whereas girls feel self conscious. This capacity to take the lead is why boys tend to make a better impresion at an interview for a business career, though they may not always prove to be the best choice thereafter.

Since then, there have been a great many groups that have achieved enormous fame, so it is perhaps difficult now to imagine how sensational The Beatles were at that time. They were four boys from the north of England and none of them had any training in music. They started by performing and recording songs by black Americans and they had some success with these songs. Then they started writing their own songs and that was when they became really popular. The Beatles changed pop music. They were the first pop group to achieve great success from songs they had written themselves. After that it became common for groups and singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long career. Their first hit record was in 1963 and they split up in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it had become too dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and tried to take their clothes as souvenirs! Issues in big cities

These days, more and more people prefer urban life because of all the opportunities it brings about, namely job opportunity, recreational facilities, decent education and high standard of living. However, once they settle down in a city, they have to face up to more than one problem.

To begin with, the life in the urban city is also very stressful and busy. City dwellers often have a hectic pace of life, which means that they rarely have enough time for recreational activities. People have to work hard and compete fiercely to earn a decent living, which puts people under a lot of pressure. Moreover, working hard and extra working hours mean that urban residents have very short time for their family and friends. Many people have complained that parents in the cities do not pay much attention to their children and people tend to talk less to each other.

Furthermore, people have to put up with heavy pollution in the city. There are many kinds of pollution such as air, water, land, noise and even light pollution. This is understandable because there are numerous pollutants in the city. For example, exhaust fumes from vehicles or emissions from factories are the main causes of air pollution. Pollution is detrimental to human health. It can create some incurable diseases for people such as lung cancer when we inhale too much fume and dusk.

Another serious problem is unemployment, while many people move to the city with hope of find a job, their dreams turn sour due to the competitive job market. In the city the demand for the quality of workforce is getting higher and higher. Poorly-trained workers from rural areas may become jobless in the city.

In conclusion, should people want to move from the countryside to the urban areas, they have to consider all the advantages and disadvantages before making up their mind.

_____ 1. There are more opportunities than problems for people living in the urban areas.

_____ 2. Although people in the city are busy, they can always have time for entertainment activities.

_____ 3. People have to work hard and compete fiercely to make money.

_____ 4. People don’t have to tolerate heavy pollution in the city.

_____ 5. Air pollution is the most serious issue in the city.

_____ 6. The competitive job market in the city causes difficulties for workers with low quality to find a job.
