Water Pollution is the contamination of water bodies. It occurs as a result of introduction of pollutants in water. Water is life. Still, we contribute in polluting the water bodies in several ways.
Water Pollution is mainly caused as a result of improper discharge of household and industrial chemicals wastes into the water bodies.
These dangerous chemicals (in the form of solid, liquid or gases) mixes with water and make it unsafe for living bodies. Water pollutants cause harm to human-beings, animals, trees and other constituents of environment.
I/read the passage and answer the following question:
Water pollution is the contamination of bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and groundwater (the water beneath the Earth’s surface). It is one of the most serious types of pollution.
Water pollution can have many different causes. Factories dump industrial waste into lakes and rivers. Sewage from households is another cause. Farms using pesticides to kill insects and herbicides to kill weeds can also lead to water pollution. These factors cause ‘point source’ pollution while pollutants from storm water and the atmosphere result in ‘non-point source’ pollution.
Water pollution can have dramatic effects.
1.what are point source pollutants?
=> Factories dump industrial waste into lakes and rivers, sewage from households, farms using pesticides to kill insects and herbicides to kill weeds are point source pollutants.
2.what are the non-point source pollution
=> Pollutants from storm water and the atmosphere result are non-point source pollution.

Fresh water is the most important source of life on the earth. Any living thing may survive without food for days however it is impossible to imagine life without water and oxygen. The ever increasing human population enhances the demand of more water for purposes like drinking, washing, performing industrial processes, irrigating crops, arranging swimming pools and other water-sports centres. Water pollution is done by the people of all over the world because of increasing demands and competitions of luxuries life. Waste products from many human activities are spoiling the whole water and decreasing the amount of oxygen available in the water. Such pollutants are altering the physical, chemical, thermal, and biological characteristics of the water and adversely affecting the lives inside as well as outside the water.
When we drink the polluted water, harmful chemicals and other pollutants goes inside our body and deteriorates all the body organs functioning and puts our lives in danger. Such harmful chemicals also disturb the lives of animals and plants greatly. When plants absorb dirty water through their roots, they stop growing and die. Thousands of seabirds are killing because of the oil spilling from ships and industries. High level of water pollution is done due to the chemicals coming out of the agricultural usage of fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides. The effect of water pollution varies from place to place upon the type and amount of water contamination. The degradation of drinking water needs an urgent basis prevention method which is possible by the proper understanding and support from the end of each and every person living on the earth.
There are many causes that lead to water pollution in Viet Nam. One of the main causes is wasting water coming from many factories and then being directly pulled out into the rivers, lakes or seas without any treatment because this is the most convenient way of dumping waste water. Industrial waste consists of some kinds of chemical subtance which are harmful for our life. Another cause of water pollution is the lack of awareness of citizens. Every day, people generate a lot of garbage and they throw them directly into rivers, ponds and so on.
One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water. Having clean drinking water is basic human right. But acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. But they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial effluent which pours into the lake everyday. Even where law existed, the government did not have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world’s water surface. But it is the dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something now.
