Most of the word's surface is water . Until recently , a pearl diver could stay underwater for longer than 2 minutes . But now , with special breathing equipment , a diver can stay underwater for a long time . A scuba-diving became a popular sport . Jacques Couteau was from Frace invited a deep-sea diving vessel in the early 1940s . In the vessel , he could explore the oceans of the world .
