Enjoying the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin

The tidal basin is a great place any time of the year. It’s where I go for a walk or a jog or to visit the Martin Luther King, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Jefferson Memorials and where I often go to unwind and enjoy the scenery. But the place is very special in early spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and the paddle boats are on the water. The blossoms were a little late this year. I made sure to be at the tidal basin when the pink blooms first appeared on April 8th. The cherry blossoms and blooming magnolia trees mark the official start of spring and the beginning of tourist season in Washington, D.C. I beat the crowds at the tidal basin by going early. It’s one of the perks of living nearby.

Forget about driving and parking near the tidal basin. There are few parking spaces and they fill up fast. I use the Metro, get off at the Smithsonian Metro Station and walk down Independence Avenue toward the Washington Monument. It’s a short walk from the monument to the tidal basin and it’s a beautiful walk in the spring. If you come to Washington for the cherry blossoms, be sure to stop at the Enid A. Haupt Garden for the magnificent display of magnolias, which are equally impressive. This Garden is near the Smithsonian Castle on Independence Avenue, a block from the Smithsonian Metro Station.

Why is music important to dairy life? Whether listening or playing music or watching a concert, music is important. Music can cheer us up, pump us up, help us to have a good time, or simply help us think… Whatever you listen to, do a little bit dairy. I’m speaking as a musician. Things in life inspire me to create music. The inspiration comes at most random moments. I make sure to carry a notebook around or some sort of thing to write on. So whatever you do, get involed in music. It can be, no, it will be a life changing experience.

Our robes were bright red, and they just jumped and curled up, we stood around to watch and sing, "Mid-Autumn Festival, welcoming the moon-lamp ..." We also had a lot of candy to eat. Traditional festivals and celebrations always play a significant role in Vietnamese culture. Besides Tet festival, the biggest and the most important celebration for Vietnamese people, the Mid-Autumn Festival, or also known as the Moon Festival or the Children’s Festival, is also a special time in the year. It’s usually held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Vietnamese lunar calendar. This special celebration is mostly embraced by children as they will have an opportunity to dress in beautiful clothes with attractive and colorful lanterns of various sizes, shapes and designs in their hands, ready for a grand procession around their neighborhood. Traditionally, lanterns signify the wish for the light and warmth. The adults also feel extremely happy as they see the radiant look on their little angels’ faces in the parades. However, the Mid-Autumn Festival is more an occasion for outdoor reunions among friends and relatives to eat mooncakes and watch the moon, a symbol of harmony and unity. This is also a special time for the traditional values and precious memories and life stories to be shared and handed/ passed down from generation to generation. Performances of dragon and lion dances are also a familiar sight on the streets when the moon is full. I really enjoy this traditional festival as this is the chance for me as well as other adults to relive our treasured childhood and a great occasion to strengthen our family ties and help the younger people to better cherish the important cultural values.
