Whenever it rains, the traffic jam gets more terrible with the joining hand of flooding. Taxis are extremely hard to or wave during the downpour. However, it only about 30 minutes on average for a standstill and 2 hours to get through the worst, not really bad compared to that of other countries. While the rapid increase in car use coupled with the deterioration of roads caused by disordered planning make the matter worse, the most annoying thing about the traffic jam the way people react when being at the congestion. Most road users ride their motorbikes on the pavement rather than waiting calmly, or they constantly use their horns to hasten riders in the front, even shouting at them from time to time. More luckily, bicyclists can leisurely carry their "war-horses" on their backs and thread their way through messy matrixes.

If there is one characteristic of British work in the arts that seems to stand out is its shortage of identification with wide intellectual trends. Playwrights and directors can be left-wing in their political lout-out, but the plays they produce rarely convey a straightforward message. The same is largely true of British novelists and poets. Their writing is naturalistic and is not connected to particular intellectual movements. The theatre had always been very strong in Britain, especially in London. The country’s most successful playwrights are those who explore the darker side of the personality and of personal relationships. In contrast, the cinema in Britain is often regarded as not quite part of the arts in all, it is simply entertainment. Britain is unique between the large European countries in giving mostly no financial help to their film industry. Classical music is also a minority interest. British seem disinterested in high education, they watch lots of television, but are enthusiastic readers. The vast minority of books reading in Britain are not classified as serious literature.

Question II:The following passage contains ten mistakes. Identify and correct them. (10pts)

I have a briefcase full of papers which describes cases Sherlock Homes has investigated. Some are failures since there were some final explanations for the mysteries in question. A problem without a solution may interest the specialist, but will offer little to the general reader. Among these finishing stories is that of the yacht Alicia, which one morning sailed into the mist and disappeared forever; the vessel along the crew were never seen again. Then there was the case of the well-known journalist Luigi Persano, who found completely mad with a jar in front of him. A jar contained a remarkable worm, unknown by science up to that point. Apart from these mysterious cases to which Holmes did not find solution, there are those which various influence people would rather no see on print and those which might affect the reputation of Holmes himself, for whom I have more respectness than for any man alive

Things started to go wrongly as soon as we got to the hotel. We were all completely exhaustingafter our long journey and looking forward to a shower and a rest. However, we found that our room was not ready, which was very annoyed, although the manager was extremely apologising. While we were waiting, we asked about the excursions to places of an interest which we have readabout in the brochure. Imagine how we felt when we were told they had all been cancelled! Apparently, the person responsible of organizing them had left suddenly and had not been replaced. Then Sally saw a notice pinning to the door of the restaurant, said it was closed for redecoration, and Peter discovered that the swimming pool was empty. When we eventually got to our room we were horrified to find that it was at the back of the hotel, and we had a view of a car park, thatseemed to be used as a rubbish dump. We seriously began to wonder whether or not to stay.

I. Read the passage and choose the best answer from A, B, C or D. LIFE OF A MAN Thomas is now in his sixties, and is one of the many homeless people who live on the streets he buys a newspaper most days. Today, with his fellow tramps, he reads about yesterday’ s student demonstration. Like many of the tramps that live under the bridge in New York, Thomas was not always so poor. A long time ago he was in the Navy, and like many who have been to sea for a long time, he has stayed slim and fit. Despite the strict organization on board ship, he loved the life, and had the opportunity to see many countries. He visited Poland and Russia; in South Africa he realized what he valued in each country was the people he met. He was always astonished and delighted by the ways in which the people he met differed from one country to another. Some day, he hopes, everyone will see the world as he does. After many happy years in Navy, he had to retire. The good things in life always come to an end. His mother and father had long since died and he’d lost touch with his other relatives. He came to New York and became an industrial designer. He was happy, although it wasn’t the same as the sea. He never wanted to get married and have children. And then there was the period of darkness. He smiles sadly. He shrugs his shoulders and looks at his hands. There are tears in the corners of his eyes. This is something that he cannot bring himself to talk about. “It all went wrong”, he whispers. He was silent for a minute; then recovered. He began to talk more loudly. “Look at me now it makes me angry. And what about the President? He’s been in power for years, and look what he’s done for us. Nothing! I’m still out on the streets and live the life of a tramp.” 39. It would appear that Thomas _________ A. has organized a protest recently. B. takes an interest in important events. C. has no contact with other homeless people. D. is not as poor as he used to be. 40. When Thomas was in the Navy, he _________ A. only visited three countries. Thomas changed his job because he _________ A. was too old to stay in the Navy. B. wanted to start a family. C. wanted to be near his relatives in New York. D. did not enjoy the work any more. 42. Thomas lost his job and became a tramp because _________ A. he did not have any family. B. he was tired of doing normal job. C. of reasons he does not want to discuss D. of the death of his parents. 43. The text states that Thomas thinks the President _________ A. should not allow home people to stay on the streets.
