The Netball Captain
In our series on women in sport, Suzie Ellis went to meet England's netball captain.
Kendra Slawinski is captain of England's netball team. When I met her, she'd had a typical day
for the weeks leading up to next month's World Championships: a day's teaching at a local school
followed by a training session in the local supermarket car park.
I was surprised to hear about her training venue.
„Don't you get strange looks?‟ I asked her. „I'm too involved in what I'm doing - concentrating
on my movements and my feet - to see anything else,‟ she said. „I might notice cars slow down out
of the corner of my eye, but that's all.‟

„My whole life now is all about making sure I'm at my absolute best for the Championships,‟
says Kendra.
„1.________‟ These are her fourth World Championships and they are guaranteed to be the
biggest ever, with 27 nations taking part.
„We'll have home support behind us, which is so special,‟ she says. „And it's important that the
reputation of netball in this country should be improved. 2.________ A home crowd will have
expectations and give more support. People will expect us to start t he tournament with a good
game.‟
Their first game is against Barbados and it comes immediately after the opening ceremony.
3.________ They have lots of ability.‟
The England team are currently ranked fourth in the world. But, as Kendra points out, the
World Championships will be tough. „You have to push yourself to play each day, there's no rest
between games as in a series. And you can still win an international series if you lose the first game.
4.________‟
In the fifteen years since she has been playing at top level, the sport has become harder, faster.
On court, players are more aggressive. „You don't do all that training not to come out a winner,‟
says Kendra.
5.________ „We're all friendlier after the game.‟
Netball is also taking a far more scientific approach to fitness testing.
„It is essential that we all think and train like world -class players,‟ says Kendra.
6.________ I see my role as supporting and encouraging the rest of the team.‟
„From the very beginning, my netball career has always been carefully planned, ‟ she says.
7.________
Doubtless she will coach young players in the future, but at the moment her eyes are firmly set
on her last big event. As she leads out her team in the opening candlelight ceremony, she is more

Four athletes talk about what they eat

A. Mark
When I’m cycling on my own I stuff my pockets with bananas and protein bars. On the longest rides
I’ll eat something every half an hour. For heavier training it’s physically impossible to get enough energy
from food alone, so you do rely on energy drinks. One development in sports nutrition since I’ve been
competing is the focus on the importance of protein. Cycling is much more weight-orientated than the
swimming I used to do, which means I need to eat differently now. Protein feeds the muscles but keeps
them as lean as possible. I’ve been an athlete for 20 years so healthy eating is normal for me, but that's
not to say I don’t get a tasty take-away meal from time to time. I’ve just learned to spot the meals that
will provide what I need, it’s simple things like steering clear of the creamy sauces and making sure I get
lots of veg.
B. Stefan
Everyone says: “As a runner you must be on a really strict diet. Do you only eat salad? Are you
allowed chocolate?” But that’s really not the case. I’ve got salad and vegetables in my shopping trolley
but there’s always some chocolate in there, too. I do most of the cooking at home, On the morning of a
competition, I get so nervous I feel really sick. I have to force myself to have something so I’ll have
enough energy to perform well. Sometimes I get those days where I don’t want to be so disciplined. You
think: ‘I’ve trained really hard, I deserve to have a pizza.’ It’s OK to have a little relapse every now and
then but I can’t do it every day or I’d be rolling round the track!
C. Guy
For a gymnast, a kilo can make all the difference. But if you don’t eat enough you’ll be a bit shaky
and weak. It’s all about eating the right amount, at the right time - two hours before you do anything,
Breakfast is fruit and if I’m a bit peckish, whole wheat toast and butter! I get to training for 12 pm, then
break after three hours for lunch - more fruit, a cheese and tomato sandwich. I’m back in the gym from 5
pm to 8 pm, then I go to my Mum’s for steak and vegetables or chicken and salad. I don’t tend to mix
carbs with meat late at night. I’m not the best cook, but I think it’s fun to do. I know how to make chicken
from my mum’s recipe, it just takes me a bit longer to get organized.
D. Tomas
It’s definitely possible to eat delicious food and be a professional swimmer. I’ve always loved food so
I’m not going to be obsessive because you can get what you need and still enjoy every bite. I’m not
really one for endless protein shakes and energy drinks. Before a training session I’d rather have a
banana. That’s not to say I’m perfect. At the world championships I got my feeding strategy wrong - and
I paid for it. For my sport it’s what you eat two days before the competition that makes the difference.
You have to “carb load” - eat piles of rice or pasta - and I didn’t. I was leading for a long way but I ended
up 11 th . My biggest indulgence is pastry. And I love baking. I train for 33 hours a week so in my time off I
need to rest, and spending time in the kitchen is perfect. Swimming is my biggest passion but baking
comes a close second.

THE LITTLE SCHOOL OF CALM

From the outside the Maharishi School in Lancashire looks extremely normal. Walk inside
and you find rows of desks and children in uniform,
just as you would do in many other
schools. After a short while, however, you become aware of the wonderfully calm
atmosphere and the extraordinary lack of noise in the building. Talk to the teachers and you
learn that the school has no major discipline problems, there is no bullying and children are
rarely absent. So what is the secret?
81.
Transcendental meditation and breathing exercises are an important part of the timetable at
the Matrarishi School. Pupils are taught how to relax mentally by closing their eyes and
silently repeating over and over again a'mantra', or Word of Wisdom, at certain times of the
day. Meditation is seen by some as an effective way of relieving stress, which teenagers
experience in the form of exam nerves, bullying and family break-ups. Its supporters also
say that it helps to overcome hyperactivity, anxiety and aggression.

82.
The school was started in 1986 by a group of parents who were dissatisfied with the state
education system. The number of pupils at the school has increased since then from 14 to
100, with ages ranging from four to 16. Academic achievements are impressive and for the
past five years pupils at the school have obtained the highest average GCSE exam marks for
the whole of Lancashire. It's not surprising then, that more and more parents are sending
their children to be taught there.
83._
Many people in the local community, however, are sti[[ unaware of the school's existence.
Others view the school with suspicion and associate it with mystic cults or the hrppy
movement of the sixties. 'Local
people don't really understand what goes on here,' explains
one teacher. 'They
just
see us as a little strange and prefer to keep their distance.'
84._
If there is a child who is creating a problem, the school has a very thorough method of
dealing with it. A four-page form has to be filled out by the teacher, but the first three pages
of the form contain nothing but the child's good points. In this way the problem does not
become the main focus of attention; parents and teachers are encouraged to consider the
child's successes and achievements before they look at the last page.
85._
But what do the children who study there think of the school's approach?'Meditation really
helps me with my work, says 15-year-old Ruth. 'It makes me relared and I don't get nervous
during exams. It's a shame it's such a small school, though. I can't sfudy music because there
aren't enough pupils, and when we read plays by Shakespeare we all have to read three or
four parts each. But I love it here, and I know I'll miss the peace and quiet when I have to
leave.'

SECTION III: READING (5.0 points)
Part 1: Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following
questions. Write your answer (A, B, C, or D) in the numbered boxes.
Since ancient times, one of the most common materials people have utilized to make things
with is wood. Wood is used to make houses, buildings, and other structures. People also
make a large number of smaller objects with it.
The desire to make finished products more beautiful appears to be ingrained in huma n
nature. On account of this fact, for thousands of years, people have carved and shaped
wooden objects to make them more appealing to the eye. Humans have additionally tended
to create both religious and ceremonial objects from wood. In fact, all around the world,
countless cultures have made use of ceremonial wood carvings. These objects often reflect
the spirit of the people who made them, and each of them tends to hold a special
significance as well.
One of the most common types of wood carvings is the mask. People in many cultures in
Asia, Africa, and North America have made ceremonial wooden masks. In Africa, for
instance, large numbers of tribes use wooden masks for vari ous spiritual rituals. These
masks are often in the form of animals that are sacred to the tribes. In other cases, the masks
have human forms. The faces, however, may not be exactly humanlike. For instance, the
faces can be distorted, having wider, longer, smaller, or larger features than normal. The
masks may be carved to give them ugly or frightening appearances as well. And, on other
occasions, the masks are made to look as beautiful as possible.
While masks tend to be fairly small, other wood carvings can be enormous. Among the
largest of all ceremonial wood carvings is the totem p ole. Totem poles have been built by
several Native American tribes that reside in the northwestern part of North America. They
are normally made to represent families, or they may honor significant historical events.
Some even tell stories. A typical totem pole has several individual carvings on it. Each
carving represents a different part of the family history, event, or story. Most totem poles
have human or animal faces, as well as other figures, carved in them. They are so large that
they are made from e ntire trees. Once the trees are cut down, master craftsmen work on
them. When completed, they may or may not be painted. Then, the totem poles are
positioned in places of honor and placed upright.

Task 3. Read the article. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the
sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (14-19). There is one extra sentence which you do not
need to use. For questions 14 – 19 write the correct letter A – G on the answer sheet.

Ever since the 1910s, when film-makers like Cecil B. DeMille first set up shop in
Hollywood, mapmakers, the explorers of the city’s social terrain, have been compiling
that only-in-Los Angeles fixture, maps showing the locations of the fabulous homes of
the stars. Collectively, they form an unofficial version of the Oscars, reflecting who’s in
and who’s out in the film world. ‘Each one looks different’, says Linda Welton, whose
grandfather and mother pioneered these maps. (14) ________. Former icons vanish from
them, new ones appear on them, and some of the truly greats are permanent fixtures on
them.
In 1933, noticing the steady stream of tourists drifting westward to follow the stars
from Hollywood to Beverly Hills, the nearby district where most of the stars went to
live, Ms. Welton’s grandfather, Wesley G Lake, obtained a copyright for his Guide to
Starland Estates and Mansions. (15) _________. For 40 years Ms. Welton’s mother,
Vivienne E. Welton sold maps just down the road from Gary Cooper’s place at 200
Baroda. The asterisk indicated that it was the actor’s final home, as opposed to a plus
sign (denoting a former home) or a zero (for no view from the street).
‘My grandfather asked Mom to talk to the gardeners to find out where the stars lived’,
Ms. Welton recalls. ‘She’d say: ‘Oh, this is a beautiful garden. Who lives here?’ Who
would suspect a little girl? Ms. Welton and her crew now sell about 10 000 maps a year
from a folding chair parked curbside six days a week. (16) __________.
The evolution of the maps mirrors both the Hollywood publicity machine and real
estate and tourism development. (17) __________. The first celebrity home, according to
Marc Wanamaker, a historian and a founder of the Westwood and Beverly Hills
Historical Societies belonged to the artist Paul de Longpre. He had a luxuriously landscaped house at Cahuenga Avenue and Hollywood and real estate agents would
take prospective clients past it on tours.
Although it is not known for certain who published the first map, by the mid-1920s all
sorts of people were producing them. (18) ____________.
One of the most famous of the early maps was produced to show the location of
Pickfair, the sprawling home of the newly married stars Mary Pickford and Douglas
Fairbanks Sr, and the homes of some of their star friends. During World War I, they
opened their home to serve refreshments to soldiers. As Vivienne Welton once
explained in an interview with Mercator’s World, a map and cartography magazine,
‘She urged a few friends to do the same. (19) __________.
For over 40 years, people have marched toward the corner of Sunset and Baroda with
hand-painted yellow signs saying: ‘Star Maps, 2 blocks’, ‘Star Maps, 1 block’, ‘Star Maps
The Third English Language Contest for School Children, 2014-2015
Form: 10 - 11 Page6
here’. The maps reflect the shifting geography of stardom as celebrities, seeking escape
from over-enthusiastic fans, some with ill intentions, have moved out to other locations.
A. As they do so, they give advice to the tourists on star safaris through the lime
green landscape of Beverly Hills.
B. Studios like Paramount published the names and addresses of its stars on theirs,
and businesses distributed them as a promotional gimmick.
C. Others, however, say that the star maps are still an essential part of Hollywood
and the film world.
D. Early film stars like Lillian Gish lived in modest, somewhat grubby rooming
houses, taking street cars to and from the studio.
E. Updated regularly, they are still for sale at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and
Baroda Drive.
F. And so a map was needed.
G. It is the oldest continuously published star map and one of a half-dozen or so
maps of varying degrees of accuracy and spelling correctness sold today.
