Eleven students at Middlebury Junior High School returned this week from their trip to Hawaii. The students spent two weeks helping an environmental agency with their work. This agency, Environmental Ocean Life, works to preserve and protect the plants and animals that live in Hawaii’s waters. Every year, they test the water and check on the plants and animals to make sure they are doing well in their environments. The Middlebury Students joined them for two weeks to help them with their water tests.

The students reported that they had no idea how many different things could be tested. “We learned a lot," said Justin Lim, a seventh-grade student. “We learned how to measure salinity, which is how much salt is in the water. Some plants and animals need certain levels of salinity to stay alive.”

The agency thanked the students for their help by giving them the gift of a surfing lesson. “I never thought I’d be surfing in Hawaii," said Nancy Jones, another seventh-grade student. She was very grateful to Environmental Ocean Life. “Not only did they teach me and my classmates so much about the Pacific Ocean around Hawaii, but they also gave us a surfing lesson. They are so cool!"
