Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Thousands of years before Columbus came to the New World, the American Indians entered North America by crossing a narrow strip of land that once connected Alaska and Siberia. The migrants entered a new world in which there were no people at all. But there were many animals to hunt, and there were forests where nuts, roots, and berries could be gathered.

When the Europeans came to the New World, the Indians, at first, taught the settlers how to plant corn, bake fish, make canoes, and smoke tobacco. In return, the white introduced horses, guns, gunpowder, and alcohol. But at last, there were struggles for land, and the struggles could have only one result – war. When the wars were over, all Indians were moved to large tracts of land called reservations. Now, some of them, embittered by mistreatment, are determined to preserve their tribal life; some wish to modernize the reservations. These alternatives, with many variations, are what most Indians have chosen – a future in modern technology and education, or the revival of ancient tradition and treaties.

The Indians moved to a new world which was ___________ .

A:inhabited by primitive men.            B:inhabited in by American migrants.          C:completely uninhabited by other people.                                                                                               D:once settled by Europeans.

There are two types of air pollution. That is the outdoor air pollution caused by factories, automobiles and biological matter. We most commonly associate air pollution with smog and acid rain. That is of course a problem and you might be surprised how aware children are of the air pollution concerns. However, there is also indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution causes just as many health problems around the globe as outdoor air pollution. And because many people are not aware of it, they suffer unnecessarily. According to the World Health Organization, 2.4 million people die each year from air pollution and 1.5 million of these deaths are caused by indoor air pollution. Educating young  kids about  air pollution can be an efficient solution to this alarming worldwide issue because it can make them somewhat aware of air pollution. They may have heard about the greenhouse effect, global warming and acid rain. These problems may be  frightening for children to hear. However, children also have the power to make changes both inside their home and globally.

Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, many coaches believe that it is possible for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants do not run a marathon to win. More important for most runners is their personal finish time and their placement within their specific age group and gender. Another very important goal is to break certain time barriers. For example, ambitious recreational first-timers often try to run the marathon under 4 hours; more competitive runners will attempt to run under 3 hours. Many runners then prefer to finish for example in 3:29:59, which makes them " sub-3:30h marathoners ", instead of 3:30:01.

For most runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many coaches believe that the most important element in marathon training is the long run. Recreational runners commonly try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles a week in total when training for the marathon. More experienced marathoners may run a longer distance. During marathon training, adequate recovery time is crucial. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended to take a kreak for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results from not getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in a lower endurance and speed and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.

4. If the marathon runner feels tired or has a pain, _________.

C. it is time for him to stop his training D. he should take a break for several days

5. Overtraining may lead to _________ .

1. A beauty contest is a competition based mainly, though not always entirely , on the physical beauty of its contestants. But it doesn’t involve of their personalities , and questions they answer and how they answer them . Almost invariably, competitions for men and women are separate events, and those for men are not referred to as beauty contests . Beauty contests for women are more common , and winners are called beauty queens. Beauty contests for men , like Mr. Universe, are more likely to be “body building” contests quite unlike the traditional “beauty contests” in which women are judged upon many attributes both physical and otherwise . However, in the 1990s, male “beauty contests” began to shift focus. Instead of only considering muscle mass, the competitions began to judge the natural physical attributes of the contestants as well as their physiques. These include Mr. World and Manhunt International.

The Earth's Energy Budget

The way the Earth interacts ___ (1)___ the sun's energy can be displayed in a diagram called the Earth’s energy budget. It displays the sun's energy that reaches us and how much of that energy absorbed and reflected is by the earth and___(36)___atmosphere. Solar energy reaches earth as electromagnetic radiation. Once the energy reaches earth, some of it is absorbed by the atmosphere, ___(37)___ clouds.

Some of it makes it to the earth's surface, and is ___(38)___ by land and oceans. The ___(39)___ of energy absorbed affects temperature. The energy ___(40)___ is not absorbed by the earth or its atmosphere is reflected. back out to space in the same wavelengths in which it came to earth. On ___(41)___, the amount of energy coming in is equal to the amount of energy going out. Therefore, we say the earth's energy budget is balanced. ___(42)___ more energy was coming in than was going out, the earth's temperature would increase. On the other hand, if too much energy is reflected, and not absorbed, we'll see a ___(43)___ in the earth's temperatures. Of all of the sun's energy that hits the Earth, about 70% is absorbed by ___(44)___ land, ocean, atmosphere and clouds and about 30% is reflected back into space.

In this era of increased global warming and diminishing fossil fuel supplies, we must begin to put a greater priority on harnessing alternative energy sources. Fortunately, there are a number of readily available, renewable resources that are both cost- effective and earth – friendly. Two such resources are solar power and geothermal power.

Solar energy, which reaches the earth through sunlight, is so abundant that it could meet the needs of worldwide energy consumption 6,000 times over. And solar energy is easily harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight to electricity. In theUSalone, more than 100, 000 homes are equipped with solar electric systems in the form of solar panels or solar roof tiles. And in other parts of the world, including many developing countries, the use of solar system is growing steadily.

Another alternative energy source, which is abundant in specific geographical areas, is geothermal power, which creates energy by tapping heat from below the surface of the earth. Hot water and steam that are trapped in underground pools are pumped to the surface and used to run a generator, which is produces electricity. Geothermal energy is 50, 000 times more abundant than the entire known supply of fossil fuel resources. And as with solar power, the technology needed to utilize geothermal energy is fairly simple. A prime example of effective geothermal use inIceland, a region of high geothermal activity where over 80 percent of private homes are heated by geothermal power.

Solar and geothermal energy are just two of promising renewable alternatives to conventional energy sources. The time is long overdue to invest in the development and use of alternative energy on global scale.

A. They both require the use of a generator

B. They both use heat from the earth’s surface

C. They both require fairly simple technology
