Children’s Academy has set the benchmark for conducting activities in such a way that the students not only enjoy but also learn a great deal from it. With the same perspective in view, the Inter- School Debate Competition was held in commemoration of the Birth Anniversary of our founder father, Norton Emmanuel.

The Interact Club of Children's Academy organised an Inter School Drama Competition 'Sattva' on 26th January 2015 at the school open air theatre. 14 prestigious schools from Jaipur paripated in this mega event. Keeping with the importance of the day, the theme was based on Patriotism and Nation Building. The paripants surprised all with their drama skills. The sensitivity with which each of the characters was portrayed was indeed commendable. Each performance provided entertainment and food for thought.
The President of Rotary Club, Jaipur presided over the function. Quite a few Rotary members graced the occasion. TheChief Guest unfurled the National Flag after which the competition started.

In the keenly fought competition, it was MRC School, Jaipur. that lifted the trophy for the Best Performance. Sushant City School came a close second, while there was a tie between Pink City School and Vivekanada Baal Bhavan for the third place. The host school was not a part of the competition, although they presented a very thought- provoking drama on youth and nation building. The presentations were adjudged by well known theatre personalities Sharat Chandra Mohan, the veteran theatre artist, Ms Priyadarshini Sharma, actor-director and Kapil Mishra, Director; Jaipur Natya Manch. The judges opined that the standard of the competition was so good that it was difficult to choose the winners.

The entries were adjudicated on the basis of theme, dialogue delivery, expression and over all presentation. A special prize was presented to Vinti Sonkya of Children's. Academy for putting up a most memorable performance. There was also a prize for the Best Comic Role which went to Abhinav Nirwan of Cambridge School.
The Chief Guest lauded the initiative taken by the host school in conducting such a fabulous competition. He gave away the prizes to the winners and motivated them to paripate in many more competitions this. He stated that paripation matters more than winning. The programme ended with a zestful rendering of National Anthem.

About 12 million people were displaced due to the turmoil in eastern Aleppo. The four year battle between Syrian rebels and forces backed by Bashar-al-Assad's government to wrest control of the city, initially tilted in favour of the Opposition, and Assad’s Alawite-dominated government lost extensive territory to rebel groups.

However, the tables turned in July 2016, when government troops closed the rebels' last supply line into Aleppo with the support of Russian airstrikes. They followed this up with a decisive campaign in November, that resulted in the recapture of all of Aleppo the following month.

On December 15, residents along with rebel forces were allowed to evacuate the city. Even as Aleppo fell, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) recaptured Palmyra from Syria and Russian troops. The crisis lingers on.

Kids on stage

Children are performing in popular musicals in many London theatres. We talked to
various people about the phenomenon of children on stage.

A. THE DIRECTOR

Andrew Tyler chooses children to appear in stage musicals

I’m not only looking for children who can sing, dance and act, they also have to have lively
personalities and a lot of confidence - it’s essential that they grab the audience’s attention and if they can’t do that, I don’t choose them. When I’m working on a show, I start by contacting agents and telling them what I need, and then I hold auditions for as many children as I can. When the children have been chosen, I draw up the contracts for them and the schedule for performances - there are usually three teams of children for each show and they perform according to a rota system. No child is in a show for more than six months. Being in a show is tiring for the children because they have to combine it with going to school, but they have a great time and they learn an enormous amount about discipline, teamwork and concentration, as well as special skills such as choreography and singing.

B. THE YOUNG PERFORMER

Emily Gould is currently appearing in a popular London show

I love musicals and I’m thrilled to be in this one. I’ve got quite a big part and have to sing a song all by myself in one scene. I’m always pretty nervous during each performance because I’m worried that I might make a mistake. But at the same time I’m excited about doing it and I feel quite proud of myself when I’m on the stage. I’m one of the youngest children in the show - the age range is five to thirteen. The older children are good to me - they remind me about what I have to do next and encourage me a lot. I don’t have time to be in any of the sports teams at school, which is a shame because I’d like to do that too, but acting and singing are great. I want to keep on performing in musicals for the next few years at least, though I’m not sure I want it to be my career.

C. THE STAGE MOTHER

Anita Benfield’s son Tom is currently appearing in a popular musical in London

Tom started going to a local drama school when he was five. Last year, the head of the school suggested that he was good enough to audition for this musical. I took him to a series of four auditions and he got the part. We’d had no experience of the audition process and although he got the part, I thought it was horrible. The vast majority of the children get rejected. At the end of each audition, dozens of children burst into tears when they were told that they hadn’t been successful - they were absolutely devastated. When Tom got chosen, we were given the schedule for the ten weeks of rehearsals - I hadn’t realized how much time would be taken up. It’s all rather exhausting - for the parents as much as the children. When the performances start, you get a timetable of the performances the child will be appearing in. But he also has to be available at short notice to replace a child who is ill, and this makes it hard to plan anything. Because of that, we can't book a holiday and recently we weren’t able to attend a family wedding.

D. THE EX-CHILD STAR

Ian Miller was a child star in the 1980s

My parents were very keen for me to be on the stage and I showed a lot of talent for it when I was a child. By the time I was ten, I’d been in a number of stage musicals and also appeared in various TV series. When I went to secondary school, I stopped performing because I developed other interests and lost my enthusiasm for it - I didn’t want to give up so much time to do it, I wanted to do what my friends were doing. I enjoyed my time as a child performer but I didn’t miss it when I stopped. Lots of child performers don’t go on to become successful adult performers even if they want to. People in the business tend to think that they aren’t capable of developing into good adult performers and they aren’t taken seriously when they’re older. I don’t want my own children to do it - I think performing can be very stressful for children and I think it’s much better for children to concentrate on getting a good education and then train to be a performer when they’re older, if they want to.

My favourite food is fried rice with vegetable and chicken curry with salad. This is, in fact, the most popular menu in our country. The rice is first boiled in water and then the boiled rice is fried with some chicken and vegetables and oil. The chicken curry is prepared separately using some spices and chicken and finally, the salad is prepared using different vegetables and fruits and then those are cut into pieces and mixed together with mustard. Then these three items are served together.

I eat this menu approximately 3-4 times in a week. This menu is prepared at home mostly and sometimes I eat it in a restaurant. There are some variations in the way this food is prepared and the ingredients using which this food is made. Different restaurants have their own speciality in preparing and serving this menu.

This is my favourite food for many reasons: firstly it is very delicious and healthy. This menu meets the demand for different food values our body needs. It is available in most of the part in our country. Thirdly, I like it as it offers the variations of tastes. Moreover, it is not that much expensive to prepare and does not require o much effort to prepare. For all these reasons it is my favourite food.

Every morning from Monday to Saturday, I get up at 6 o'clock. After breakfast, I go to school by bicycle. It takes me about 20 minutes from my house to get to my school. Usually, I study at school until 11:30 a.m. I return home at noon to have lunch with my family. In the afternoon I attend English and computer classes. I always get home just in time for dinner at 7:30 p.m. After eating, I went to study, finished studying, I went to the movies. When I finished watching the movie, I went to brush my teeth and go to sleep.
