Ethnic groups in the highlands of Viet Nam
In the mountainous regions of Viet Bac and Tay Nguyen, people follow traditional methods to clear forests for farming, reflecting their connection to nature before the industrial age. The climate in these highlands is tropical, so farming mainly occurs during the summer and autumn seasons. To make the most of the weather and land, people plant different crops in a season, which not only earns more money but also helps prevent erosion during the rainy summer months.
With their skilled hands, women create clothing with beautiful colors, patterns and designs, suitable for working in terraced fields and traveling across hills and mountain paths. The forests remain largely untouched, and farming methods are simple. In these areas, people have many special songs and traditions, like ceremonies for the sky, to hope that people will have good health and successful harvests.
The Central Highlands are also rich in myths and epics, comparable to those of China and India but not yet fully explored. Ethnic groups here are known for creating traditional musical instruments like the T'rung and Krongput, as well as for their traditional gong music (Cong Chieng) and group dances, which deeply affect community life.
Moving along the coast from north to south, there are ethnic groups whose livelihoods depend on fishing. Every morning, fleets of fishing boats set sail, returning in the afternoon with their catches. Life along the coast is bustling, similar to the busy activity of farmers during the planting and harvesting seasons.
Farming in these highlands primarily occurs during the summer and winter seasons.
