Worksheet (Week 11) SVIP
M&M's are colorful button-shaped candies produced by Mars, Incorporated. The candy shells, each of which has the letter ‘m' printed in lower case on one side, surround a variety of fillings, including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, crispy, mint chocolate, peanuts, almonds, orange chocolate, coconut, and peanut butter.
M&M's originated in the United States in 1941 and are now sold in over 100 countries. Forrest Mars, Sr. founder of the Mars Company, got the idea for the confections in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War. He saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell of tempered chocolate surrounding the inside, preventing the candies from melting. Production began in 1941 in a factory located at 285 Badger Avenue in Clinton Hill, Newark, New Jersey. One M was for Forrest E. Mars Sr. and one for William F. R. Murrie, President of Hershey's Chocolate. When operations were started, the hard-coated chocolates were made in five colors: red, yellow, brown, green, and violet.
The M&M's soon became a success because, at the time, air conditioning was still not often found in shops, homes, and cars, and melting chocolate bars became a problem. Still, the M&M's do not melt because of their coat.

The Statue of Liberty
Since 1886, Lady Liberty has stood in New York's harbor, her torch lighting the way for millions of immigrants searching for freedom. The Statue was a gift from France to celebrate America's 100th birthday.
Made by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, it was inspired by the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was proposed that the French pay for the sculpture and the Americans pay for the pedestal. It's difficult to imagine now, but at the time, not many Americans wanted to help pay for the Statue of Liberty. To encourage public donations, Bartholdi began by constructing the torch-holding arm, thinking that it would inspire people to help raise money for the pedestal. The gigantic arm was displayed for six years in New York's Madison Square Park, but the public contributions did not materialize. In the end, the project was saved when the New York World newspaper, published by Joseph Pulitzer, adopted the campaign and raised the necessary money.
The Statue of Liberty was supposed to be a lighthouse, but finally, the torch was too weak. Today it is green, but its original color was copper. Since 1986 the torch has been closed to visitors because it is too dangerous, and you can no longer climb up to the Statue's head since the World Trade Center attacks in 2001.
