World Environment Day is a global initiative celebrated annually on June 5^th and was created to inspire people around the globe to become active about the environment and learn more about ways in which they can help to ensure the future of our planet.

When was it celebrated for the first time?

World Environment Day dates back to 1974, more than 40 years ago, when it was first celebrated in an American city, Spokane (Washington) with the theme “Only One Earth”. Since that year it has been celebrated in more than 30 countries worldwide.

The United Nations decided to celebrate World Environment Day to make people around the world aware of environmental problems like marine pollution, human overpopulation, global warming and wildlife crime.
