Problem 1
Hannah is having a party and she has invited 14 friends. Including herself, there are 15 children. They need 3 cakes for each child and a small bag of sweets for each child. There are 6 cakes in a packet and 5 small packets of sweets in one large packet.
a. How many packets of cakes do they need to buy?
Total cakes needed = 3 * 15 = 45
Packets of cakes needed = 45/6 = 7,5
Since they can't buy half a packet, they need to buy 8 packets of cakes.
b. How many packets of sweets do they need to buy?
Total small packets of sweets needed = 15
Large packets of sweets needed = 15/5 = 3
c. If the packets of cakes cost £2.99 each and the packets of sweets cost £2.89, how much will they spend?
Cost of cakes = 8 * 2,99 = 23,92 (GBP)
Cost of sweets = 3 * 2,89 = 8,67 (GBP)
Total cost = 23,92 + 8,67 = 32,59(GBP)
d. Hannah’s mum pays with two £20 notes; what change does she get?
Total paid = 2 * 20 = 40 (GBP)
Change = 40 - 32,59 = 7,41 (GBP)
Problem 2
John has been asked to buy 2 pencils for each of the 34 children in his class, including himself. The pencils come in packs of 6.
a. How many packs will he need? Will there be any pencils left over?
Total pencils needed = 2 * 34 = 68
Packs of pencils needed = 68/6 = 11,33
Since they can't buy a fraction of a pack, they need to buy 12 packs.
Pencils in 12 packs = 12 * 6 = 72
Leftover pencils = 72 - 68 = 4
b. If a pack costs £1.99, how much will John need to spend? If John is given £30 to spend, how much change will he get?
Total cost = 12 * 1,99 = 23,88 (GBP)
Change = 30 - 23,88 = 6,12 (GBP)
